A catastrophic night in Lombardy saw United suffer a humiliating 4-1 loss to Cesc Fabregas’ side, which extended their winless run to seven fixtures and led to Fernandes publicly questioning the approach of boss Michael Carrick.
The result, alongside Fernandes’ comments, had raised serious questions about Carrick’s future ahead of Sunday’s Premier League home game against Bournemouth, but the Press Association understands he will remain in charge.

United skipper Fernandes has been a pale imitation of last season’s performer so far this term, and questioned Carrick’s tactics as another Champions League trip ended with an eye-catching post-match player interview following on from last week’s remarks by Lisandro Martinez.
Fernandes claimed it was the staff’s decision “not to press man-to-man and sometimes leave a little bit of space in behind” in Como.
Yet, the Press Association understands United are not expected to punish Fernandes for his impassioned post-match interview a week on from Martinez’s caustic remarks, which led to a fine and talks with the club hierarchy.
The Portuguese then returned from Italy with the squad in the early hours of Thursday morning and had to deal with a robbery at his house that took place while he was overseas.
Fernandes’ family are understood not to have been in the house at the time and police quickly attended the scene, with United supporting their skipper.
