Manchester United have been told that Gabriel Gudmundsson could have been sent off during Sunday’s draw with Leeds United. Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s fourth Premier League goal of the season cancelled out Bryan Mbeumo’s first-half opener.
However, Gudmundsson could have been sent off for a rash challenge on Andrey Santos. The defender instead received a yellow, but former Premier League match officials Dermot Gallagher and Darren Cann believe Gudmundsson could have easily seen red.
“I can only try and second guess the referee, it is not a nice tackle, but I can only assume that because he was so close, he has not got the speed and intensity,” Gallagher told Ref Watch.

“It is up there on his Achilles and if you make that challenge, you are going to run the risk of a red card all the time.”
While speaking on Match of the Day, Cann said: "Gabriel Gudmundsson made a very risky challenge on Andrey Santos.
“His tackle had similarities with Ryan Sessegnon's red card for Fulham on Saturday, with both players making contact with their studs on the back of the calf/Achilles of their opponents.
"Gudmundsson could also have easily seen red instead of the yellow card he received. I think what saved him was that there was a little less intensity in his challenge, however he could've had no complaints had a red card been shown."

Leeds also thought they should have been awarded a penalty when Ethan Ampadu was dragged to the ground by Harry Maguire during the second-half.
Referee Darren England waved away the appeals and VAR upheld his decision, and Gallagher believes the correct call was made.
He said: “They tangle up together. The No5 for Leeds also grabs Maguire so he brings him back to bring his teammate down. All in all, play on."
Reflecting on the draw, United boss Michael Carrick said: “There was definitely that commitment there. It had to be there today. I said it the other day, I didn’t doubt it, I could feel it.
"The mood and feeling in the group was as good as I can remember for some time. I was looking forward to seeing that in the game, and I saw that intensity. I spoke to them this morning about the history of this game and what it means to the supporters and to the football club.
"We spoke about what it takes to come to their territory and to get a result. It tests you if you come here and you aren’t quite there. It wasn’t a perfect performance, it wasn’t our most unbelievable performance but there was lot in there that showed how together the group are.”
