For a while, dissent has been a problem at Chelsea. Cole Palmer received a yellow card for constantly complaining to the referee on Saturday, and his comments to Paul Tierney were picked up on RefCam.
During 2025-26, Chelsea were the worst for both yellow cards and red cards. A lot was due to dissent, with Chelsea picking up 98 yellows and eight red cards in the Premier League – the most in the league.
Chelsea secured a 2-0 win. A brace from Pedro Neto was enough to pick up back-to-back wins and a first clean sheet in the Premier League since January, but it could have been a whole lot different on the day.
Tim Sherwood believes Morgan Rogers should have been sent off. Everton had chances at 0-0 too, while the injury to Emi Martinez could have derailed Chelsea. Luckily for the Blues, Mike Penders was solid.
Palmer had constantly contested decisions made by Paul Tierney throughout the game, but it took until the 65th minute for Palmer to get a yellow card. It was his second yellow card of the 2026-27 season.
Now, TNT Sports have published footage from Tierney’s RefCam. It includes Tierney issuing a warning to Josh Acheampong for stealing yards when taking throw-ins, and his verdict on Rogers’ risky tackle.
A broken jaw is expected to keep Martinez out for 45-60 days…
It also picked up Palmer’s comments when booked, after a foul made by Moises Caicedo. The ref begins: “Pulled his shoulder.” Palmer comes into shot: “That’s not a foul [pointing right], but that’s a foul?”
“He pulled his shoulder. I told you at half-time, go away,” Tierney continued, suggesting he had warned Palmer at half-time about his protestations. Palmer ignored that, continuing: “It’s the same foul”.
With Tierney reaching into his pocket, Palmer hilariously then says, “Don’t book me” before Tierney wields a yellow card and reiterates, “I’ve told you”, which prompts a wry smile. “Five times I’ve told you. No.10.”
What was noticeable about Palmer was his off-the-ball work rate. Playing off Joao Pedro in a formation that was fluid between 3-4-2-1 and 4-4-2, Palmer dived in to block a clearance from Jarrad Branthwaite.
Replays showed there was no contact, but given the punishment could have been a second yellow card, VAR would not have intervened. However, Tierney made the right decision and simply gave a free-kick.
Joe Cole and Steve McManaman agreed that it wasn’t a second yellow, but that Palmer would have had his heart in his mouth when Branthwaite went down. Luckily, Palmer and Rogers avoided suspension.
