Serena Williams' Tennis Hall of Fame induction is blocked by little-known rule after 2026 comeback
Serena Williams' Tennis Hall of Fame induction is blocked by little-known rule after 2026 comeback

When Serena Williams announced her retirement from tennis after the 2022 US Open, many thought her illustrious career was over for good.

Williams cemented her place at the top of the sport by winning 23 Grand Slam singles titles in the Open Era, including seven Wimbledon victories and six US Open wins.

The US native inspired athletes across the world with her success, but chose to initially walk away from the sport at age 40 to focus on growing her business, Serena Ventures, and spend quality time with her family.

Why Serena Williams cannot be inducted into the Hall of Fame until she retires

To the delight of many who watched her dominate women's tennis for over two decades, William made her long-awaited return to the sport in June, primarily so her daughters, Olympia and Adira, could see her compete live on court and understand what she achieved.

Her return to women's doubles came at the 2026 Queen’s Club Championship alongside rising star Victoria Mboko and made it to the quarter-finals before being forced to withdraw due to Mboko's knee injury.

The 44-year-old then made her return to women's singles when she received a wildcard into Wimbledon, but her long-awaited comeback ended in a three-set defeat against WTA No. 87 Maya Joint.

Williams has since played doubles on three occasions with her sister, Venus, suffering first-round exits in Cincinnati and at the US Open, with many questioning her return to professional tennis after a four-year absence.

In fact, her return to the sport has blocked her induction into the International Tennis Hall of Fame. That is because rules stipulate that players must be completely retired and no longer a significant factor on the ATP or WTA tour for five calendar years before they become eligible for the ballot.

Williams' initial retirement in 2022 put her on course to be selected for the Hall of Fame in 2027, but since she competed on the tour in 2026, the five-year countdown has effectively restarted or requires a fresh assessment by the Enshrinee Eligibility Committee.

Located in Rhode Island, United States, the International Hall of Fame honours the sport's greatest players, contributors, and wheelchair athletes from around the world.

Which women's tennis players feature in the Hall of Fame

When Williams is eventually inducted into the Hall of Fame, she will join a long list of other women who helped propel the sport to what it is today.

Five-time Grand Slam winner Maria Sharapova, who retired from professional tennis six years ago, was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2025 after becoming 'one of the most recognisable names' in the sport's history.

Former world number one Kim Clijsters also features on the list for success during the 2000s, making history at the 2009 US Open by becoming the first unseeded woman and the first mother in nearly thirty years to win a Grand Slam singles title.

Other notable names include Margaret Court, Martina Navratilova, and Steffi Graf, the last of whom achieved a Calendar Year Golden Slam in 1988 by winning all Grand Slam singles titles and the Olympic gold medal in the same year.
