Two people, including a child, were killed Saturday after a vehicle drove through a youth soccer game at a sports complex in Wichita, Kansas, prompting the suspension of the state's inaugural high school girls flag football championship games being held on an adjacent field.
The Wichita Police Department said it was investigating a mass-casualty incident involving a vehicle at Stryker Sports Complex. Multiple other people were injured and transported to area hospitals, according to police.
The driver was taken into custody, and authorities said there was no ongoing threat to the public, according to local media reports.
A witness told KWCH-TV in Wichita that a black pickup truck drove through the youth soccer fields, striking multiple people before stopping farther down the fields. Police had not publicly detailed the circumstances leading to the incident.
The Kansas State High School Activities Association suspended the girls flag football state championship tournament to a later date because of the emergency.
"The KSHSAA extends our condolences to the families and teams impacted by the incident on a field adjacent to the flag football competition at Stryker Sports Complex Saturday," the association said in a statement posted on social media.
"Given the nature of the emergency, we felt it was best to suspend the flag football third place and championship games until a later date. Details will be announced Monday."
The tournament was scheduled to crown the first state champion in Kansas high school girls flag football after the sport became an officially sanctioned high school activity in the state earlier this year.
St. Thomas Aquinas, Shawnee Mission West, Shawnee Mission South and St. James Academy all advanced to Saturday's semifinals.
The third-place game and championship game were scheduled to take place later Saturday evening. The KSHSAA said it would provide updated information about the games on Monday, Oct. 19.
