Late in the first quarter of the Denver Broncos' game against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, cornerback Riley Moss was penalized for defensive pass interference after Jacoby Brissett's pass intended for Michael Wilson fell incomplete.
On a day full of penalties, that call was perhaps the most egregious. Replays on the CBS broadcast showed that the DPI flag was completely unwarranted, as Moss didn't even make contact until after the ball had arrived.
Denver ended up having 11 penalties called against them, which cost the team 114 yards of field position. Take a look at the Moss replay for yourself:
Pat Surtain, who sat out the game due to injury, made his thoughts clear on social media:
Broncos coach Sean Payton clearly grew frustrated with officials during the game, and cameras captured him letting a crew member hear it in the third quarter. Payton was asked about the flag-happy officiating after an eventual 30-16 win, and he initially said, "I'm never going to criticize the officials." But he then recalled a zinger he delivered to the officiating crew: "At some point I said, ‘If you guys are doing your best to tune the TV audience out, you're on a roll.’"
Fortunately, the questionable officiating did not decide the game, as Denver now returns home victorious with a crucial AFC West showdown up next on the schedule.
