Derby County press conference notebook as John Eustace reveals David Clowes chat

Derby County go into the game against Sheffield United at the weekend as they look to secure only their second win of the season

John Eustace remained steadfast in his belief that Derby County can get their season on track after a dreadful start as he faced the press at Moor Farm this afternoon.

The Rams head coach took questions from the BBC, ITV and DerbyshireLive ahead of Saturday's trip to Sheffield United as they look to secure their second win of the season.

There was lots to discuss with the former Blackburn boss who addressed questions about the form, a meeting with David Clowes and how he is trying to find solutions to get Derby motoring while dealing with a crippling injury list.

Here were some of the main headlines from this afternoon.

Eustace meets Clowes

John Eustace says he has the full support of Derby County's hierarchy and says owner David Clowes understands the difficult position they are in. Derby are currently in the bottom three of the Championship after a dreadful start to the season which has returned just one win from their opening 11 games.

The opening to the campaign is a far cry from how Derby finished last season, when they finished on the cusp of the play-offs only to miss out on the final day.

Injuries have not helped the situation with the club currently nursing 11 players on the sidelines, eight of whom have impacted their defence. With pressure mounting, Eustace was asked whether he had the full support of those above him, and he said: "One hundred per cent.

"I've met David earlier in the week, and we sat down and had some dinner. We chatted about things and we've got their full support. He understands it's a difficult situation at the moment with the injuries and he's fully confident that we'll get through this difficult moment."

Eustace is grateful to the fans

John Eustace remains grateful to Derby County fans for their support but said it is his job to put "smiles" back on their faces. Derby go into Saturday's clash with Sheffield United having won just one of their opening 11 games, which has left them in the Championship's bottom three.

But the match-going fans have stayed with the team and the manager through what has been a tough start badly impacted by a flood of injuries.

Eustace admits, however, that he needs to start seeing results, although he stressed that the team needs their support as they try to emerge from the weeds.

"The fans were one of the main reasons I came back to the football club," he said. "I played here, I had two fantastic years here and I understand what this club means to the community and to the fans.

"There's no one more frustrated or angrier than me about the situation we're in. It's my job now to try to put smiles back on their faces, and I think they understand to a certain point why we're in this situation.

"But I've certainly still got to do more and the players have got to do more as well. We're certainly in it together and that's the most important thing. I always said, we always have to stick together for the tough times and the good times.

"It is a tough moment for all of us, but I'm seeing some really good signs. We're not a million miles away from picking up results and the most important thing now is that the fans stand behind the team.

"That's the most important thing and I think they've certainly done that throughout the whole season."

No back three

John Eustace says he will leave no stone unturned in a bid to transform Derby County's season but ruled out moving to a back three. An injury crisis in defence has rocked Derby with eight out of the 11 players sidelined being from the backline, a list that includes Matt Clarke, Derry Murkin and Sondre Langas.

With Derby having won just one of their opening 11 games, Eustace says he is trying to think of ways to get the Rams back on track after a dismal start.

But he ruled out switching to a back three, a system he has used before, because he does not have the required players.

"There's not a stone I am unturning to try to find the solution," he said. "Ultimately, we've got one centre-half available. We could play a back three, but I don't think we've got the personnel to do that.

"There are lots of different ways I'm trying to find the best chemistry with the team. I understand that we've got a lot of forward players for sure.

"We haven't got many defensive-minded players as well, so it's certainly not easy, but I'm trying everything possible to try to get the right results. As I said in the last six games, I don't think we've been a million miles away.

"You look at the Birmingham game, the West Brom game, which we certainly should have got more out of. Burnley was a very good result for away at Burnley. Stoke could have been different. QPR was disappointing, and Wrexham we should have had all three points. We're trying everything, but we're not getting the rub of the green at the moment.

"But that'll turn over 46 games, and I understand I need to get some results over the next four games. I'm certainly trying my hardest to make sure we do. What I will say is the boys' attitude, the way they've applied themselves every day in training has been excellent. They're working just as hard as I am to make sure we try and turn a few things around."
