Ampthill started the game at great speed scoring a try after three minutes, gaining ground up-field, before Edward Timpson scored in the corner. This sparked Caldy into action and in their first attack they scored their first try from Will Robinson down the wing.
Timpson scored his second try at the midway point of the first half before Oscar Wilson scored a third try for the visitors to extend their lead to 16 points.
It hastened a purple patch for Caldy with Matt Gallagher scoring two tries before the interval to reduce the deficit to just two points at half time.
Ampthill started the second half as they did the first and scored two tries within five minutes of the re-start to restore their large advantage, only for Gallagher to complete his hat-trick on 49 minutes.
Both sides traded tries before Ollie Hearn reduced the arrears to seven points with 15 minutes remaining.
Tries from Barney Merritt and Effan Jones took the game away from Caldy in the last ten minutes. Rhys Tudor and Oliver Jones pulled the score back before former Caldy player Elliott Gourley and Jamie Fallon scored to end the game as a contest.
After the match, head coach, Matt Cairns, said: “We have conceded too many points at home this season, we did some good work but it was like a basketball score. We have a couple of weeks to sort it before our next match”.
The coaching staff will be grateful for a week off this week and injuries will be healed before a trip to London to face Richmond on October 31. Richmond are currently bottom of the league and lost to Rotherham 29-14 on Sunday.
