Chelsea have a tough away game tomorrow – and they need it to go better than their last one did.

Chelsea’s last away game saw them bullied and batter by Brentford before the international break. It was 3-0 in terms of the score, and it was a sudden return to some of the totally lifeless performances we saw in the latter half of last season.

Even the introduction of Jordan Henderson for that game didn’t help – Chelsea were outfought, outplayed and outmuscled in front of a delighted G Tech Arena crowd. Today in his press conference, Alonso was asked how he would stop that happening again when we go to a potentially feisty Hill Dickinson Stadium tomorrow to face Everton.

“I want that we compete, that we know what it takes to win Premier League games away in tough stadiums, in stadiums that they create a great energy, emotional, but we are able to deal with that playing, but as well competing well, and for sure, the experience for Brentford is not forgotten,” Alonso said.

The fact that it’s an early kick off rather than an evening game should help – that always seems to reduce the home advantage a little.

If this team wants to go to the next level, a key thing will be making sure we compete in these tough away games consistently.

In other news…

Alonso also denied Chelsea were planning on signing a midfielder in January, despite the injury to Reece James.

Joao Pedro is thriving as Chelsea’s number 9 – but why was he originally number 20?

Emmanuel Emegha is out injured once again – he’s been in the squad once and made zero appearances for Chelsea this season.
