Freestyle Friday returns to Chess.com this Friday, October 2, resuming the race for places in the 2027 FIDE Freestyle Chess World Championships. Ten weekly tournaments remain before December's knockout finals, which will award one qualification spot in each of the Open and Women's fields.
GMs Magnus Carlsen, Fabiano Caruana, Nodirbek Abdusattorov, Vincent Keymer, and Pranav Venkatesh have already qualified for the Open championship. Three of the eight places remain available in each field.
Alongside the Freestyle Friday qualification spots, two further online qualifiers will give players opportunities to reach Weissenhaus, Germany, where both championships will take place in February.
GMs Hans Niemann, Denis Lazavik, Ian Nepomniachtchi, and Nodirbek Yakubboev are among the players expected to compete in the first event after the three-month break, organizers say. GMs Anna Muzychuk and Alexandra Kosteniuk are also expected to take part.
Friday's event begins at 11 a.m. ET / 5 p.m. CEST / 8:30 p.m. IST, with live coverage on Chess.com, the Freestyle Chess YouTube channel, and DAZN.
"Formula One has its Grand Prix weekends. Chess now has its Fridays. With Freestyle Friday and our online qualifiers, the road to a World Championship becomes a season-long show. That's the future of the game," Freestyle Chess CEO Dr. Andreas Walker said in a press release.
The weekly broadcasts will feature hosts who compete while commentating on their games. The announced lineup includes GMs Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Niemann, Vidit Gujrathi, and Oleksandr Bortnyk, along with WFM Anna Cramling, WGM Dina Belenkaya, and ChessBase India's IM Sagar Shah and GM Harshit Raja.
Freestyle Friday is an 11-round Swiss tournament for titled players, played with a 3+2 time control. Freestyle chess, also known as Chess960 or Fischer Random, randomizes the starting arrangement of the back-rank pieces, reducing players' reliance on memorized opening preparation.
The championship resumes with an important detail, announced by FIDE and Freestyle Friday in August: points earned during the first half of the season carry over. Players will continue adding to their totals every Friday through December 4, with separate Open and Women's leaderboards. Weekly points range from 10 for first place to one for eighth through 10th. The top seven eligible players in each field will advance to a knockout stage. The quarterfinals take place on December 11, followed by the semifinals and finals on December 18. The winner in each field earns a World Championship spot.
Pranav and Muzychuk have already qualified through the first half of the Freestyle Friday Championship. Pranav topped the Open standings with 60 points, while Muzychuk led the Women's standings with 88:
| # | Open | Women |
| 1 | Magnus Carlsen | Bibisara Assaubayeva |
| 2 | Fabiano Caruana | Harika Dronavalli |
| 3 | Nodirbek Abdusattorov | Alua Nurman |
| 4 | Vincent Keymer | Dinara Wagner |
| 5 | Pranav Venkatesh | Anna Muzychuk |
Three qualification opportunities remain, each awarding one place in the Open championship and one in the Women's:
Both standalone online qualifiers will begin with a Swiss tournament open to titled and non-titled players who have not yet qualified. The top eight finishers will advance to a second Swiss alongside eligible titled players. From there, the top 16 will enter a knockout, with the winner securing a championship spot.
The Women's World Championship will take place on February 5-7, 2027, followed by the Open World Championship on February 12-14. Both events will be held at Weissenhaus Private Nature Luxury Resort on Germany's Baltic coast.
