Edinburgh 17-27 Toulon: Three things we learned

Toulon class wins the day Edinburgh showed plenty of heart to keep coming back at Toulon, but the French side's class proved too much in the end. Melvyn Jaminet was the game's outstanding player, with two tries – including one world-class individual score – and 22 points to lead his side to victory. Edinburgh twice responded brilliantly to falling 10 points down with good tries, but Toulon never allowed them to get back into a position to get their noses in front. The home side's botched attempts to deal with the restarts after their tries certainly did not help. Much like they showed when knocking Glasgow Warriors out of the Champions Cup last season, the former European champions demonstrated excellent game management to navigate through difficult moments and pull away for victory. Scotland star White on point Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend will have been pleased with the performance of Ben White. The Scotland scrum-half was quietly excellent, with his kicking game helping Toulon to dominate the aerial battle. White's lovely double-pump pass put a try on a plate for Seta Tuicuvu and, despite a heavy strapping on his leg, he looked sharp throughout. With the Scotland squad named next week for the November internationals, White looks to be arriving in good form. Douglas the disruptor It feels a little unimaginative to highlight Freddie Douglas's work at the breakdown, but it really is quite freakish how regularly the 21-year-old burgles the opposition of the ball. It started with a timely stripping of the ball when Toulon were mauling their way into the danger zone in the first half. Then there was a crucial steal on the floor in the shadow of the Edinburgh posts. Douglas forced four turnovers, more than any other player on the pitch, and it will be fascinating to see if Townsend looks to deploy his poaching skills against New Zealand, Australia and Japan next month.
