Chelsea Injury News And Return Dates: Updates On Malo Gusto, Pep Chavarria, Emi Martinez & 3 Others

Chelsea fullback Malo Gusto was absent from the matchday squad for the 2-0 win over Everton at the weekend.

There were concerns that the France international had picked up an injury, but manager Xabi Alonso confirmed that he was not picked due to illness.

Expected Return Date – Saturday 24th October vs Tottenham (h)

Pep Chavarria

The 28-year-old was also unavailable for the Everton game, and when asked about the defender’s absence, manager Xabi Alonso revealed that he had sustained a knock in training:

“[Pep had] a little problem yesterday; we are not certain of the situation yet because it was late. Jorrel is fit and has played there, so it’s just that change.”

As Alonso mentions, it doesn’t appear to be a serious injury, but Chavarria needs to undergo further assessment before a timeframe can be given for his return.

The fullback is, therefore, a doubt to face Spurs at the weekend, as things stand.

Expected Return Date – Unknown

Emi Martinez

The keeper broke his jaw in a nasty collision with Jarrad Branthwaite on Saturday. He was stretchered off the pitch and taken to hospital, where he had to undergo surgery.

Martinez has confirmed that he will be unavailable for a “few weeks”. That suggests the Argentinian international won’t be back before the next international break.

Expected Return Date – December

Reece James

The captain has undergone minor surgery on a knee injury which he sustained during the last international break.

James is expected to be sidelined for up to three months, meaning he won’t play again this calendar year.

Expected Return Date – January

Jamie Gittens

The winger sustained an ankle injury whilst playing for England’s Under 21s against Kazakhstan last month.

Speaking before the victory against Everton, Alonso revealed that Gittens is still a few weeks away from making his comeback.

Expected Return Date – November

Emmanuel Emegha

The striker has suffered yet another setback, but Alonso claims he should be back in full training at some point this week.

It means Emegha could be in contention for the matchday squad ahead of the London derby on Saturday.
