Bath City beat Frome Town on penalties(Image: Simon Howe/Flickr)
BATH City are the region’s only Southern League representatives left in the FA Trophy following their first round proper penalty shoot-out win over Somerset rivals Frome, writes Keith Watson .
The Romans emerged the 4-3 victors from the spot following a goalless draw, while Gloucester City were sunk 4-2 on penalties at Redditch after a 2-2 draw, and Taunton were beaten 4-1 at home by Wimborne.
Storm Boelo did not make things easy for the two sides at Twerton Park, but chances came at both ends. Zack Ali blazed over for Frome, while Zak Drew drew a save from Harvey Wiles-Richards, and at the other end a Sev Streczen header looped onto the top of the crossbar.
Twice in the second period, Bath’s Donovan Wilson was denied a goal by the offside flag, while teammate Wiles-Richards saved from Archie Ferris.
Penalties were ultimately needed to settle matters, and after Wiles-Richards, below, saved from Jon Davies, and Kyle Phillips denied Alex Fisher, Frome’s Harry Lucas missed the target, leaving Matt Bowman to win it for the Romans.
At Redditch, meanwhile, ten-man Gloucester City were unlucky to be edged out 4-2 on spot-kicks following their 2-2 draw.
Tyler Bruck put the home side ahead late in the first half, and City looked in big trouble when Michael O’Regan was sent off five minutes into the second period.
However, Harry Williams scored twice in the space of five minutes just after the hour mark to put the Tigers into an unlikely lead.
Five minutes from time, though, Dan Sweeney levelled the scores and the game went to penalties.
Gloucester’s Ethan Dunbar blinked first when skying his effort at 2-1 down, and Kian Hill then missed the target as well to put Redditch through.
Elsewhere, Taunton were well beaten by Wimborne, who ran out 4-1 winners. A Joe Smith penalty and a second from Max Bustamante had the Magpies two goals clear at the break.
Max Davies replied for Taunton after half-time, but Smith soon restored the two-goal advantage.
Both sides missed penalties as time ticked down, before Cam Munn eventually added a fourth goal for the Dorset outfit.
