Pittsburgh is known for major sports venues such as Acrisure Stadium and PPG Paints Arena, but a much smaller football stadium along the city's riverfront offers one of the area's most distinctive game-day settings.
Rooney Field, home of the Duquesne Dukes football team, is considered the smallest stadium in all of Division I football. The venue seats about 2,200 fans and is located in Duquesne University's Bluff neighborhood along the Monongahela River.
The stadium opened in 1993 after Duquesne revived its football program. University officials converted a former parking lot into a football facility, creating a riverfront home for the Dukes near Downtown Pittsburgh.
The venue was later renamed Arthur J. Rooney Athletic Field in honor of the late Pittsburgh Steelers owner and Duquesne graduate Arthur J. Rooney.
Rooney Field's defining characteristic is its compact size, but the facility also stands out for its traditional appearance.
Its press and coaches' box gives the stadium a throwback atmosphere that differs from the large video boards and premium seating areas commonly found at many modern college football venues.
For fans attending games, the setting offers views of the Monongahela River, the Downtown Pittsburgh skyline and several of the city's signature bridges.
While much of the region's attention centers on the Steelers, Penguins and Panthers, Rooney Field provides an opportunity to watch college football in one of Pittsburgh's most unusual settings.
Its combination of history, riverfront location and intimate atmosphere has helped make the stadium a lesser-known attraction for sports fans in Western Pennsylvania.
