After six matchweeks, Tottenham Hotspur are still winless in the Premier League. They have picked up only three points from a possible 18.
There were signs of encouragement in their recent performance against Manchester United, but once again, wastefulness in front of goal cost them all three points. Spurs squandered several good chances in the first half, and after going a goal and a man down after the break, a point at Old Trafford can be considered valuable.
Roberto De Zerbi’s side will be on the hunt for their first win of the Premier League season when they host newly promoted Coventry City at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Monday. Frank Lampard’s men have won each of their last two games in the Premier League and will be heading to N17 full of confidence and high spirits.
Spurs have dropped to the bottom of the table following Fulham’s 1-0 success over Hull City on Saturday. Heading into the seventh game, this already feels like a must-win for De Zerbi, who has come under severe pressure following his club’s poor start to the campaign.
Now, Chris Sutton has dropped his prediction for the game. The former Celtic star thinks there will not be a lot between the two sides. He feels Coventry City could threaten on the counter but has backed Tottenham to beat them 2-1 for their first win of the league season.
“Tottenham will be fresh from their training camp in Marbella, and we are about to find out if it worked. If they don’t beat Coventry and get their first win of the season, then they will probably have to go back out there next week as well,” Chris Sutton told BBC Sport.
“Being serious, they do look like they are improving already, and they played well against Manchester United last week. They are a dangerous counter-attacking team, and their pace in forward areas will cause problems, but this is going to be Tottenham’s night.”
The Sky Blues have won back-to-back games and climbed up the Premier League table. They beat Nottingham Forest away before the international break, and fired a warning to De Zerbi and Co. by demolishing Newcastle United 4-1 at home earlier this week.
As a result, the fixture is suddenly looking far from easy on paper. Coventry players’ tails will be up, and they will try to hit Tottenham hard on the counter. Premier League great Alan Shearer believes Tottenham will be in another relegation dogfight if they fail to beat Coventry, something De Zerbi’s boys must look to avoid and prove the ex-Newcastle United striker wrong.
