Man United in relegation zone, but Michael Carrick insists: I deserve to keep job

Michael Carrick insisted there's enough evidence that he should keep his job despite Manchester United sitting in the Premier League relegation zone.

United staged a dramatic late fightback to draw 4-4 with Aston Villa on Sunday. But with just one league win all season, Carrick's team are in the bottom three ahead of the international break.

Villa were twice up by two at Old Trafford -- 2-0 and 4-2 -- before they were stunned by two goals in stoppage time from Joshua Zirkzee and Patrick Dorgu.

The rousing finale is unlikely to quiet questions about Carrick's position. However, the 45-year-old said he believes there are enough positives to suggest that he should be in charge when United next play against Liverpool at Anfield on Nov. 22.

"Yeah, 100%, yeah," Carrick said at the postmatch news conference. "I think there's more than enough. Goals change games and you've got to deal with it, and it's part of something we have to improve on drastically, but there's more than enough. We're just making it too difficult for ourselves at the moment in certain times.

"I'm quite clear with what direction the club needs to go in, and it's got to win games."

Before arriving for his postmatch news conference, Carrick was involved in an awkward exchange during a TV interview with Sky Sports.

Asked whether there would be conversations with the club's hierarchy in the coming days, Carrick said: "Is there?"

When it was suggested that fans would "assume so," Carrick replied: "Would you?

"We haven't won enough games, but I expect to move forward and keep working on what we've been working on, tighten up on a few mistakes, and win football matches."

Carrick was also asked by Sky Sports whether he would consider quitting. The former England midfielder said: "That's not going to happen."
