Poznan draw a ‘good experience’ for youthful Sunderland, says Le Bris

Regis Le Bris hopes Sunderland's youthful team will benefit from playing in a cauldron-like atmosphere at the Enea Stadion following Thursday's 1-1 draw with Lech Poznan.

Sunderland failed to make it three wins from three to begin their Europa League campaign, with Tymur Tutierov's early goal cancelled out by Leo Bengtsson's 70th-minute strike.

The Black Cats made the perfect start after 78 seconds when Mateusz Lis' poor pass was picked off by Nilson Angulo, who crossed for Tutierov to head into the bottom corner.

It was Sunderland's earliest major European goal and the second-earliest away goal by an English side in the Europa League after Bobby Zamora for Fulham in April 2010 (20 seconds), and the visitors should have been further ahead by the break.

Granit Xhaka and Nordi Mukiele passed up presentable opportunities, but Poznan hit back in the second half when Bengtsson rifled in the equaliser at Robin Roefs' near post.

Neither side were able to find a win as Sunderland became the first English side to score inside the opening two minutes of a Europa League game and failed to go on and win the match (seven out of seven before Thursday's game).

Sunderland also had 11 shots on target, tallying an expected goals (xG) total of 2.97 from their 25 attempts overall, which was their most in a game in all competitions since May 2021 against Plymouth Argyle in League One (also 11), though Le Bris was keen to look at the positives.

"We expected this atmosphere, this style of play from our opponent," Le Bris told BBC Radio Newcastle.

"I think they are a good team and after the first goal, they showed that they had quality to build up under pressure, to go through our block when we were a bit open.

"They created chances as well. After that, we created our chances. We deserved to score the second goal.

"We didn't and in a nice stadium like this against a good team, the momentum can shift and switch really quickly and it happened.

"So a good experience. We started the game with seven players under 23 years old, so they need to experience those situations against good teams to get better."

The result saw some of Sunderland's fringe players given the chance to impress, with Angulo one of the standout performers for the Premier League strugglers.

Angulo has now registered two assists in his last four games for Sunderland in all competitions, after managing none in his previous 14 appearances for the club, while he also finished with team-high totals for chances created (five), crosses (four) and successful dribbles (two).

Tutierov, meanwhile, scored his first goal for Sunderland in his fourth appearance in all competitions for the Black Cats.

He is also the first Ukrainian to score for an English club in the Europa League since Andrii Yarmolenko for West Ham against Sevilla in March 2022.

"It felt so good," Tutierov said. "I had goosebumps. At first, I didn't think I had scored, but then I did and ran to the cameras.

"Everyone said to me, imagine scoring a goal, because when the moment comes, you will put the ball in the net. That is what happened."
