In the short time since Arsenal's shock Carabao Cup exit at the hands of Fleetwood on Tuesday, Mikel Arteta has found himself facing scrutiny.
Not for the result. Cupsets happen, after all. The Gunners won the Premier League title last season, reached the Champions League final and are going strong this term. While last night's elimination was humiliating, it's merely a setback. They can't win them all.
Instead, Arteta has been widely criticised for the way he responded to Max Dowman's red card. The talented 16-year-old lost his cool amid the heat of the battle, seeing red for violent conduct after kicking out at Harrison Neal following a bruising tackle from the Fleetwood star.
It was a moment of madness. Dowman, who has drawn comparisons to a young Lionel Messi such is his quality and potential, simply snapped. It was a moment indicative of his age and immaturity. Arteta, however, responded furiously, exchanging angry words with the teenager as he trudged off the pitch.
