Steve Conroy wasn’t happy with something he spotted during Celtic’s 7-1 win over Hearts on Sunday.
Whilse Celtic cruised to a 5-1 half-time lead, Hearts did pull a goal back when the score was sitting at 4-0.
And the former Scottish referee reckons the officials missed an infringement in the build-up to Laurent Mendy’s goal for the visitors at Celtic Park.
Former Celtic striker Tony Watt has high praise for the 20-year-old 🙌
Speaking on The Ref’s View podcast, Conroy claimed Hearts had taken a throw-in well away from where the ball had gone out of play.
Conroy said: “I know I’m being picky, the distance for Hearts’ goal, the distance between where they took the throw in and where the ball went out, it was about a mile and a half of a difference. That’s picky, but I’m allowed to be picky.”
And Conroy has got a point. If the throw-in was taken as far from the correct position as he suggests then Hearts may have left Celtic Park with a 7-0 tanking instead.
Law 15 of the game requires a throw-in to be taken from the place where the ball crossed the touchline. A throw-in taken incorrectly should be awarded to the opposing team.
Mendy’s goal came in the 41st minute with Celtic already leading 4-0. It was a miserable afternoon for the visitors, who had no answer to Martin O’Neill’s side.
Callum Osmand was among the goals with a double, and his performance had former Celtic striker Tony Watt raving about a ‘world class’ part of the youngster’s game.
Celtic eventually ran out 7-1 winners, although Conroy clearly felt the officials had been too lenient with Hearts over the throw-in.
