France descended into chaos over the weekend. Protests on Saturday gave way to rioting and looting with clashes with police reported across France, including in the capital, Paris.
Amid the unrest, there have been more than 2,400 arrests. On Monday, the French Prime Minister, Sébastien Lecornu, called for local and partial curfews in order to ease the crisis. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez admitted that police “lost control” of the situation, citing a “lack of anticipation” in particular cases.
It is in this context that Paris Saint-Germain will host Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday. The fixture, Nunez says, is not threatened by the ongoing violence. “The question [about the match] is not being asked, nor is it for other European games,” he said. Lille OSC host Galatasaray on Wednesday. Olympique de Marseille, Stade Rennais, Olympique Lyonnais, and RC Lens all play away in their European fixtures this week.
PSG manager Luis Enrique was asked about the ongoing protests across France. “I am not the person to ask about the topic. I am here to talk about football. Of course, we don’t like this kind of violence,” he said. PSG host Barcelona at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday, looking to continue their winning run in this year’s edition of the competition.
