A new perk in a sponsorship deal signed by Rory McIlroy may leave his rivals looking on jealously. It was confirmed earlier this week that the Northern Irishman had become the global ambassador for DP World, a logistics company, who are the title sponsors of the European Tour. As part of the deal McIlroy will be able to use two 'personalised fitness and recovery trailers', which he will be able to take with him around the world.
The trailers include gym equipment, an infrared sauna, a cold plunge, and a hyperice recovery station. It means that he will have the best possible preparation going into tournament, no matter where he is in the world.
McIlroy won't be the first golf star to use a similar trailer, with Justin Rose using what he calls his 'recovery vehicle'.
The advantage for McIlroy is that his support staff need not manage the logistics of coordinating his international calendar, with DP World overseeing the shipping and customs operations. The partnership spans multiple years, though the exact duration remains undisclosed.
"When you're competing around the world, consistency really matters," McIlroy said in a press release. "Having the same environment to train and recover in every week gives me and my team one less thing to think about and lets us focus on preparing and performing," reports the Mirror US.
"DP World knows how to make that happen wherever I am playing. I am really excited to have DP World on the team as we continue to push the boundaries of performance together."
The magnitude of the logistical challenge is substantial. McIlroy maintains a more extensive travel schedule than most elite competitors, with tournaments across the U.S., Europe, Asia and Australia scheduled before year's end.
Yuvraj Narayan, CEO of DP World, added: "Moving goods reliably across borders is what we do for customers in every corner of the world.
"Applying our global scale, network and logistics expertise to help Rory perform at his best is a natural fit, and a powerful way to show what a smart, end-to-end supply chain makes possible.
"It's a groundbreaking partnership that sets a new standard for how a business can support an athlete's performance. We're proud to have him on our team."
The collaboration was announced at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum in Delhi, where McIlroy is currently competing in the DP World India Championship.
