When healthy, Mike Evans has been exactly as advertised for the San Francisco 49ers this season. The six-time Pro Bowler and Super Bowl 55 champion has 27 receptions for 420 yards and three touchdowns so far this year, acting as the perfect safety valve for Brock Purdy. Unfortunately for Evans and the 49ers, they have to manage a nagging Achilles tendinitis injury in a way that allows the veteran playmaker to return at full strength later this season.
With the 49ers' eyes on the big picture and Super Bowl contention, they will keep Evans out of their Week 9 home game against the Las Vegas Raiders as he continues to heal up. Evans hasn't played since leaving a Monday night matchup with the Washington Commanders early on October 19th. The 49ers are trying to play for winter's postseason, and they know they need Evans to succeed there.
Still, while Evans' injury isn't season-ending by any means, which is good to hear, what's concerning is the definite lack of clarity about when he might finally come back to San Francisco's lineup. Postseason seeding still matters, and the 49ers have a different, worse offense when Evans isn't available.
As it stands, Evans is also questionable (read: probably unlikely) to play against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 10. That means the earliest we'll potentially see him return to the 49ers lineup again is in Week 11 against the Minnesota Vikings. Given the context of Evans having an Achilles issue, such a timeline would make sense, provided Evans continues to progress well.
For what it's worth, per Cleveland Clinic, full recovery from Achilles tendinitis can take months, depending on its extent. Woof. The good news is that the 49ers seem to believe Evans' injury is less serious than that.
Jordan Watkins is listed as Evans' backup on the 49ers' official depth chart. Watkins is in his second NFL season after being selected in the fourth round of the 2025 NFL Draft. He has six receptions for 138 yards so far in 2026.
