Ipswich v Forest match thread

IPSWICH TOWN v NOTTINGHAM FOREST

Tonight's match thread is sponsored by the Orwell Bridge — helping people bypass Ipswich since 1982.

Match preview

Friday night football takes us to Portman Road, where Ipswich Town welcome Nottingham Forest for an intriguing Premier League encounter between two sides experiencing contrasting fortunes.

Ipswich sit comfortably in 10th place with nine points from seven matches. Gary O'Neil's side have shown plenty of attacking ambition, scoring 11 goals, although conceding 15 suggests there's still work to do defensively. Their narrow 3–2 defeat at Manchester City last weekend demonstrated that they can compete with the league's stronger teams.

For Forest, things are rather less encouraging. Oliver Glasner's side arrive in Suffolk sitting 19th, with just five points and one victory from their opening seven matches. Three consecutive league defeats have increased the pressure, although their performances have arguably deserved more than the results suggest.

Forest have scored just five league goals this season, making the return of Morgan Gibbs-White particularly welcome. Liam Delap also returns to face his former club, having struggled to find his goalscoring touch since leaving Ipswich.

The hosts will be without Saša Lukić, while Forest are missing Igor Jesus and Nicolò Savona.

History favours the visitors. Forest are unbeaten in their last six meetings with Ipswich, winning five, including a 4–2 victory at Portman Road in March 2025.

Weather report

It's looking like a thoroughly unpleasant evening in Suffolk, with Storm Austen bringing strong winds and rain to the region.

Temperatures are expected to be around 8°C at kick-off, with showers possible and a brisk wind potentially affecting the flight of the ball.

There's even been some speculation about the weather threatening the fixture, although the match is currently expected to go ahead.

In short, a classic English football evening. Wrap up warm, hold on to your programme and don't attempt any ambitious crossfield passes.

Tonight's referee

Thomas Bramall takes charge, assisted by Tim Wood and Craig Taylor, with Constantine Hatzidakis on VAR.

Bramall's Premier League record shows an average of approximately 4.1 cards per match, including 3.93 yellows and 0.18 reds.

As for bias, there's no reliable evidence that Bramall favours either club. His card statistics suggest he's prepared to take disciplinary action, but don't tell us whether his decisions systematically benefit one side.

Naturally, supporters of both clubs will have concluded that he's against them by approximately 8:07pm.

The verdict

Ipswich will see this as an excellent opportunity to strengthen their position in the top half, while Forest desperately need a result to kick-start their season.

With Ipswich's attacking threat, Forest's struggles in front of goal and the possibility of some rather lively weather, it promises to be an unpredictable evening.
