The Sweden international made a flying start to the season but was then hit by a major injury concern

Newcastle United star Anthony Elanga is ready to make a return to action ahead of the Magpies' trip to Crystal Palace.

The Sweden international has missed five matches due to a thigh problem with initial fears that he would be ruled out until Christmas. But Matthias Jaissle was on hand to deliver some positive news after the star returned to training just weeks after treatment for a muscle issue.

Jaissle said: "First of all, I am pleased that we have players back. Now the next question is their physical level we need to go step by step. For sure, he is not able to play 90, but we have trained in the lead-up, and I can count on him for sure.

“He has trained and worked really hard so I count on him for sure. He is hopefully now able to join the squad.”

Another star to return to action is Jacob Ramsey who was injured in the warm-up at Leeds ahead of the 4-1 mauling. And Jaissle was pleased to report: "I am happy Jacob is back on the pitch.

"We need to take it step-by-step with him, we don't want to take too many risks.

"I am pleased that slowly we are getting the players back.

"We still have two days left and they are doing progress and this is important that in that period their physical level is improving. "Maybe one or the other is fit enough to start."

Jaissle came under some scrutiny from some fans after the losses against Coventry City and then Aston Villa. But reflecting on the week that was, he said: "It was a week where we have been fully committed, but now it is time to focus on the next match. To show a performance to get a great result. It is the time to make it count on a matchday."
