Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy has revealed his list of Super Bowl contenders, with the San Francisco 49ers sitting in first place after moving to 6-0 on the year following their Monday Night Football win over the Washington Commanders.
San Francisco beat the Commanders 23-17 on Monday night, with 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy going 21-of-29 passing for 264 yards passing and a touchdown. Despite suffering numerous injuries this season, San Francisco remains one of three undefeated teams, with the Kansas City Chiefs and Minnesota Vikings also unbeaten at 5-0.
Posting on X, Portnoy revealed his list of Super Bowl contenders for the 2026 season, with him ranking 49ers at the NFL's best right now through six weeks. "Dave Portnoy SUPERBOWL CONTENDER RANKINGS (the only rankings that matter)," began Portnoy's post on social media.
He then added, "(Records dont matter. If I don't think you have any shot to win the superbowl you arent on my list). 1. 49ers. 2. Chiefs. 3. Seahawks. 4. Patriots. 5. Bills. 6. Bears. 7. Jags. 8. Broncos. 9. Rams."
Portnoy's list is an interesting one, especially considering it includes two of San Francisco's NFC West rivals, the Seattle Seahawks and the Los Angeles Rams. The 49ers have beaten both the Seahawks and Rams this season, the latter of which they beat down under in Australia in Week One.
At 6-0, the 49ers sit well clear of the 3-3 Seahawks and the 2-4 Rams, holding a tiebreaker over both of them. While they still need to face both the Seahawks, the defending Super Bowl champions, and the Rams, the presumptive Super Bowl favorite heading into the 2026 season, the tiebreakers will likely prove pivotal come playoff time, with the 49ers bidding for home-field advantage throughout the postseason by securing the NFC's No. 1 seed.
Following a down year last season, the Chiefs also look to be back to their best, with their offense running through running back Kenneth Walker III, who joined Kansas City this offseason fresh off winning the Super Bowl with Seattle.
Portnoy, a fan of the New England Patriots, has them at No. 4 on his list after they bounced back from a rough opening couple of weeks with three straight wins following a 1-2 start. The Buffalo Bills are fifth, while the Jacksonville Jaguars are sixth, despite losing in Week 6 to the Houston Texans in London.
The Denver Broncos, who reached the AFC Championship Game only to lose to the Patriots, are eighth, which is an interesting placement given Bo Nix's struggles this season.
Perhaps the most interesting inclusion in Portnoy's ranking, however, is the Rams at nine. Heading into the 2026 season, fresh off the trade acquisition of Myles Garrett from the Cleveland Browns and the return of future Hall of Fame defensive tackle Aaron Donald from retirement, the Rams opened their year with a defeat to the 49ers in Australia.
While they bounced back the following week against the New York Giants, they have lost three of their last four games, the most recent of which saw them fall at home to the Arizona Cardinals, a defeat that leaves Los Angeles at the bottom of the NFC West.
