Adebayo Akinfenwa reflects on his time at Wycombe Wanderers

The fan favourite, who spent six years at Adams Park between 2016 and 2022 before retiring, returned to Marlow Road to visit the current squad and staff, which include  former teammates in Jack Grimmer, Josh Scowen, Fred Onyedinma and Sam Vokes.

During a tour of the facilities, Akinfenwa praised the scale of the changes made since his playing days.

Speaking to the club, he said: "If we had this when I was playing, we would have made it to the Prem.

"It's proper nice."

But it was his affection for Wycombe that shone through most strongly.

Reflecting on a career that took him to numerous clubs across England, as well as spells in Wales and Lithuania, the 44-year-old said: "Wycombe will always be my team.

"It will always be the team I look out for.

"I'll stand 10 toes on it, it's my team and it's the team that I always look out for."

The fan favourite said returning to the club brought back memories of some of the most significant moments from his Wanderers career.

Recalling the club's promotion-winning campaign in 2018, he said: "It was Chesterfield away when Gapey [Dom Gape] scored.

"It's those sorts of memories."

He also spoke fondly of the togetherness within Gareth Ainsworth's squad and the bond shared between players, staff and supporters.

He added: "We had such a culture, such a togetherness that everybody wanted to be part of it in any aspect that they can.

"I remember when it used to snow and we couldn't train for four days, train Friday and Saturday morning, and then go and get a 1-0 win.

"Those are the memories which when I come back here, I'm like, 'Yo, they were good times'."

He also highlighted the personalities that helped shape the dressing room culture, singling out former striker Josh Parker.

He explained: “We talked about Josh Parker.

“He was the one who made sure the playlist was on point.

"You look back at those moments and memories."

Reflecting on his six years at Adams Park, Akinfenwa said the support he received from all corners of the club helped make his time at Wycombe so memorable.

He added: "They really took me into their heart.

"The fans helped, the players helped, the gaffer and the coaches helped, and the way I was managed helped.

"For me, it was everything and more.

"I signed thinking I'd maybe get two years, but I managed to play six years."

"It was the times that we had here that were very special."

During his time at Adams Park, Akinfenwa scored 61 goals in 251 matches, won the club’s Player of the Season award on two occasions, and help Wanderers win two promotions, one of which was to the Championship for the first time.
