Newcastle United are keen to sign Fikayo Tomori, according to Pete O’Rourke at Football Insider.
The Magpies were heavily linked with the 28-year-old centre-back over the summer, but their interest is said to have been revived by the news that he could soon leave AC Milan.
He has fallen out of favour under Ruben Amorim and could leave on a free at the end of the season.
O’Rourke cites “sources” who have told him that Tomori is “firmly on Newcastle’s radar.”
Newcastle defensive form has been woeful this season. They have conceded 14 goals in seven games, and conceded 86 shots in total so far.
They need an experienced centre-back, and Tomori could be the answer. As he is in the final year of his contract, they could get him for a knockdown price in January.
Tomori joined Milan in 2021 and had a been a regular. He has made over 200 appearances and scored seven goals for the Rossoneri, and won Serie A and the Supercoppa once, and the Trofeo Silvio Berlusconi twice.
However, things have changed since Amorim came in this summer. Tomori has only made two appearances this season – one in Serie A and one in the Europa League – and has only played a combined 79 minutes across both games.
Tomori looked to be on his way out this summer, but an injury to defender Matteo Gabbia and a failure to sign Goncalo Inacio meant that Amorim was short of options at centre-half, so he decided to hang on to the England international.
“At the end of the day, we have to think about our team,” Amorim said in a press conference last month. “For our team, the best thing was to take Tomori back. It was a simple decision, a technical and a tactical one.”
Juventus are just one of the clubs interested in him. They considered a move for Tomori this summer, but signed Jhon Lucemi instead.
The fact that Tomori could leave on a free next year makes him attractive to a lot of clubs, but Newcastle could decide to move sooner given the parlous state of their defence.
Sven Botman is horribly out of form, and Dan Burn is still building up match fitness after injury, which leaves just Malick Thiaw and Fabian Schar as the senior centre-back options.
A move back to England in January may appeal to Tomori, but he may decide to wait it out in Milan and see what offers he gets next summer.
