Ryan Fox appeals for big change on the PGA Tour, ‘I think we can do that’

Ryan Fox has called for more events in Asia and Australasia to be elevated, as he suggested what will help convince PGA Tour players to travel more often.

Few players in the current game can compete with Fox when it comes to winning events across the globe. His first professional victory came in Fiji back in 2012, while his most recent, of course, came at The Open Championship at Royal Birkdale earlier this summer.

The 39-year-old is one of the big names in the field for this week’s DP World India Championship. And ahead of the event at Delhi Golf Club, the New Zealander has spoken about the opportunity international tournaments have in the current game.

Ryan Fox says what will convince PGA Tour players to travel to more international events

The PGA Tour looks set to include a number of international events on the schedule in the coming years, with the Fall set to be transformed from 2028.

The challenge will be getting some of the notable names to feature in those events. Many tend to rest up during this stage of the season rather than travel outside of North America.

But Fox believes that there is scope to convince those players to change their stance if they see the events prove to be a success.

Initially, Fox was asked whether he would like to see a major take place in the Eastern Hemisphere.

Who will win the four majors in 2027?

We are already dreaming about Thursday at Augusta National!

“I guess I’m probably a traditionalist in a sense that I see the four majors as the pinnacle, but I like the idea of trying to elevate some events around the world, and I think it’s starting to happen. I think the Aussie Open has grown in stature the last few years, and I think there is certainly some events in Asia that have a chance to get to that level,” he said.

“This [event] definitely. Yeah, personally I like the idea of being an international player, and I know a lot of guys that play out here and a lot of the guys that you were talking about there like playing around the world. I would say some of my peers on the PGA Tour didn’t particularly like the idea of travel, so it can be hard to kind of convince them to travel overseas and elevate some events.

“Yeah, I would certainly like to see, if maybe not to the majors, but some kind of elevated international schedule, like there is a real big market for it in the Asia-Pacific region especially. That’s shown. We have got the Asia-Pacific Amateur coming up in New Zealand in a couple weeks, and I played in the first one of those in 2009 and that event has gone from strength to strength, and we can do something like that at a professional level I think.

“I would say you could probably get away with more than one [elevated event] in Asia. There is some huge markets all through Asia, and I know golf is a really popular sport around Asia. I think they could definitely have a couple events.

“If an event gets big enough, my peers in the U.S. will certainly be encouraged to travel a bit more no doubt. You talk about, again, Aussie Open I spoke about. I think Wentworth is another one over the last few years that has seen more and more Americans come over and play that because it’s been talked about so fondly.

“I think that’s the way to get it. Word of mouth from your peers certainly makes a difference. I think we can do that.”

LIV Golf’s biggest success story sent a message to the PGA Tour

LIV Golf did not get a lot right during its first few years in existence. However, it would be incorrect to say that the PGA Tour and DP World Tour did not learn anything from the league.

LIV had great success in Australia and South Africa. No one could watch LIV’s events in Adelaide and not be impressed. It helped that The Grange provided the backdrop for LIV’s greatest ever moment when Anthony Kim won earlier this year.

Of course, the DP World Tour has also continued to travel to Australia in recent years. But it is surely LIV’s success there that sent the strongest message to the PGA Tour.

It remains to be seen if the PGA Tour can capitalise on the potential in the years to come. But there is no question that there is a huge opportunity.
