Butch Harmon has worked with many of the sport’s greatest players throughout his time in the game.
Harmon worked with Tiger Woods for just under a decade when the 15-time major champion was at his absolute peak, and he competed against Jack Nicklaus in the late 1960s and early 1970s as well.
It’s fair to say that Harmon probably knows Woods and Nicklaus better than most people.
We are already dreaming about Thursday at Augusta National!
The Golden Bear won 73 PGA Tour titles throughout his career, including a record-setting 18 major championships.
Meanwhile, Woods has a record-equalling 82 PGA Tour wins to his name, as well as 15 majors.
Nicklaus and Woods both have huge respect for one another and it’s little wonder why, given their respective records in the game.
There is no doubt that Woods and Nicklaus are the two greatest golfers ever to have graced the game.
However, Harmon believes there were two players who were actually better ball-strikers than the American duo.
Harmon made an appearance on the No Laying Up and discussed a wide range of topics.
The world-famous golf coach surprised many with his answer when asked who he believes was the greatest ball-striker of all time.
“I would say this. I think Ben Hogan is the greatest striker of a golf ball I’ve ever seen,“ Harmon said.
“And I’ll surprise you who I would say, I think, was the next one, and that was Lee Trevino. I think Lee Trevino controlled his ball through the air, as good as anybody I’ve ever seen in modern golf. He was just a phenomenal golfer.
“He had his own way of doing it and he could compete and beat you. I mean, look at every time he went head to head with Nicklaus, he beat him at Merion in the playoff and stuff.
“I don’t think Lee gets the credit he should get.
“He was just an amazing, amazing golfer, and it was so much fun to listen to him talk when he was playing. Look, we don’t have characters like that anymore.“
Obviously Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus stand head and shoulders above everyone else when it comes to major championship wins.
However, Hogan and Trevino clearly stood out to Harmon when it came to ball-striking. Both players were tremendously successful on the golf course as well.
Hogan won 64 PGA Tour titles, including nine majors, while Trevino had 29 PGA Tour wins to his name as well as six majors.
To impress Butch Harmon, you need to be seriously special, and Ben Hogan and Lee Trevino clearly both fit into that category.
