While most of the Bangladesh Test squad members are currently in the UAE to take part in the ongoing tri-nation ODI series, some Test specialists like Mominul and Shadman Islam had long net sessions under the guidance of BCB High Performance Unit head coach Mohammad Salahuddin.
While Shadman was focussed solely on his batting, Mominul spent a lengthy amount of time bowling to the Test opener. A member of the team management told Cricbuzz that the left-arm spinner, who has picked 11 Test wickets so far in his career, is currently focussing on his bowling. It comes with a larger goal to give some cushion to the captain to use his bowling skills when frontline bowlers need a respite.
“He (Mominul) knows how to bowl, and if he can bowl few overs in the middle, it can be really helpful for the team. Taijul bowls a lot of overs, and in between if he can get some rest due to Mominul, it will help him come back fresher. Furthermore, it will also bring some variety as both of them are different types of bowler,” said the member of the team management.
“He can also replace Miraz for that matter, if the offspinner bowls a number of overs at a stretch, or in a day. Usually, we bring pacers to replace the spinners, but you also have to understand the workload of a pace bowler,” he said, adding that Test skipper Najmul Hossain also played a part in it.
“Shanto (Test captain) asked him whether he can also focus on his bowling and accepted the offer with both hands. He now wants to make sure he just does not fulfill his duty by bowling with the mindset of a part-time bowler. If an opportunity arises for him to bowl in a Test match, he can pick a wicket or two through his variety,” he added.
Mominul last bowled in a Test match was way back in 2023 when he returned career-best 3.1-1-4 figures against New Zealand at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium in 2023.
Mominul doesn't want to be underprepared ahead of the busy Test calendar that starts with the upcoming two-match Test series against West Indies, scheduled at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium from October 28.
