Los Angeles Lakers superstar Luka Doncic is the face of the franchise.
The 27-year-old entered his second full season in the Purple and Gold, and after LeBron James's departure, the Lakers are officially Doncic's team.
The six-time All-NBA guard has one mission in his Lakers tenure: win multiple titles. That's not an easy thing to do; however, Doncic is poised to lead the Lakers back to glory.
The Lakers and Doncic hope they can accomplish that goal sooner rather than later. Although there is internal belief, many doubt Doncic's ability to lead the Lakers to the promised land, including ESPN analyst Michael Wilbon.
After Doncic ran a full-page ad in the LA Times before the Lakers season opener promising fans he'd bring maximum effort, Wilbon openly questioned whether Doncic's defensive effort matches his offensive talent.
Michael Wilbon calls Luka a “wondrous player” for only “half the game” and asks how someone like that could ever lead a team near a championship.

Luka literally led Dallas to the NBA Finals in 2024. This isn’t basketball analysis. It’s a veteran media personality letting his…
"For Luka, this is Luka's show, this is Luka's team. Remember, LeBron, Magic's not walking through that door, Kareem's not walking through that door, Shaq and Kobe aren't walking through that door. This is his deal. He can take out all the ads he wants. He's a wondrous player half the game. And then half the game, he hasn't shown us he cares," Wilbon said.
Wilbon went on to say he's taking a wait-and-see approach regarding whether Doncic can truly deliver on the promise he made to Lakers fans.
"Can you lead a team to a championship and deliver on that promise that you made in the LA Times? What great player has ever only played half the game and led his team anywhere near a championship?"
"So I got to see that from Luka. All these other promises don't mean anything. I want to start to see tonight, what is your promise, and can you deliver on half the game?"
Doncic's defense is questionable, but he wouldn't be the first player to win a championship playing "half the game."
The 27-year-old's defense may be a question mark; his offense, however, is otherworldly.
"That's just the first game. I think our ceiling is even higher."

Doncic is one of the league's more gifted offensive players. He's capable of taking over the game on that side of the ball, and he's done so since he entered the league.
However, Doncic is often ridiculed at times due to his behavior on the court, playstyle and public narrative that were built at the start of his career, which he can't seem to shake in Year 9.
Doncic is far from the perfect basketball player, but he has all the tools to be the lead player on a title team. He'll look to do just that this season.
