Florian Wirtz has been linked with a move away from Liverpool in 2027, following some patchy form, and now a significant new update has emerged.

The 23-year-old has been one of the Premier League’s most under-fire players so far this season, with Jamie Carragher among those vocal about his struggles:

“I’m sorry to say this, Florian Wirtz, it’s not working and it hasn’t worked so far. Ryan Gravenberch should not be sitting on the bench and Florian ‘Wirtz playing for Liverpool.

“I struggle to think of one game where he’s won Liverpool the game, he’s been the man if you like,” the former Liverpool defender said. “He was bought in to be a star of the Premier League.

“I felt he could be the Kevin De Bruyne that City had, that I think at times got Man City over the line with Liverpool in league title runs. “But I think you could make a case for there being 10 or 12 players in Liverpool’s Premier League era in that position who have done more than Florian Wirtz.”

Wirtz enjoyed a good last week for Liverpool, however, assisting in the wins away to LASK and Brentford and showing the talent he has in tight areas.

A move to Bayern Munich and a reunion with Xabi Alonso at Chelsea have both been mooted of late, but according to TEAMtalk, the Reds “have no plans” to sell the German “anytime soon”, adding that the player himself is “keen on continuing his career” at Anfield.

This was backed up by @ITKSpace on X last Friday, who said: “Despite Bayern representatives seemingly being unable to go a single day without entertaining the fantasy of bringing Florian Wirtz to Munich, neither the player nor his father and agent, Hans-Joachim Wirtz, have the slightest intention of indulging their delusions.

“Both remain unequivocally committed to LFC and the mystique of Anfield, where Florian intends to carve his name into the history of football’s greatest institution.”

Has Wirtz underwhelmed overall for Liverpool and struggled to match the hype that surrounded his £116m arrival last year? Absolutely.

But some of the reaction to his form has been hyperbolic, with the Germany star still doing plenty of good, even if he isn’t affecting matches consistently enough.

Against Brentford on Saturday, Wirtz created an incredible nine chances, which no Liverpool player has done in a Premier League game since the 2003/04 season.

He also has more assists than the likes of Rayan Cherki, Phil Foden, Matheus Cunha, Bruno Fernandes and Martin Odegaard in this campaign to date, but is being treated like he is performing far worse than them.

More is needed from Wirtz, without question, but he is working extremely hard off the ball and showing signs of coming to life on it, and Liverpool would be mad to consider selling him.

Once Andoni Iraola’s style of play fully clicks, we are likely to see a better version of Wirtz, with wingers and Alexander Isak creating space for him and making runs in behind for him to create for.
