With more elite running backs on bye this week, including James Cook, Bhayshul Tuten, and Omarion Hampton, and with Saquon Barkley and Breece Hall still questionable for their respective games, there are many important running back decisions to make.
On Thursday Night Football last week, RJ Harvey of the Denver Broncos reemerged as a relevant fantasy running back, especially in PPR leagues, with 3 receptions for 31 yards, 25 rushing yards, and a touchdown. Meanwhile, Cam Skattebo put up a big zero after playing just six snaps and never getting a carry.
So, who should you trust in your fantasy lineup this week? Heading into Week 7, here are the top running back starts and sits.
He was on bye in Week 6but had solid production in the three weeks before. Gordon is getting a lot of carries and has scored a touchdown in each of his last three games. With De’Von Achane out for the season and Miami’s offense generally bad, Gordon may be the only startable player on the roster. Also, the New York Jets have given up over 130 rushing yards in three of their last four games, which is a good sign for Gordon this week.
Brown is not coming off his best game against the Miami Dolphins, who had been a good matchup for running backs. However, he only finished with 39 rushing yards and 21 receiving yards on three receptions. For the most part, Brown has put up solid numbers all season, even when he doesn't score a touchdown. He also gets involved in the passing game, even if it is only a few targets. With James Cook on bye this weekend, it is best to start someone with a decent floor and a high ceiling; Brown fits that profile.
Philadelphia’s offense was better than expected with Tanner McKee at quarterback, and Pierce had a strong game with 35 rushing yards, a rushing touchdown, and four receptions for 15 yards. His fantasy value depends on whether starting running back Saquon Barkley is available. If Barkley plays, Pierce’s fantasy value plummets, and he'll need to stay on the bench. But if Barkley can't play again, Pierce should be in your lineup. Since he is playing in a Monday game, monitor this closely on Friday and Saturday.
This was not a fluke. The New York Giants intentionally benched Skattebo because of his fumbling issues, including a costly fumble against the Washington Commanders in their Week 5 tie. It was his fourth fumble this season, but also the first time he lost one. The Giants coaching staff is trying to teach Skattebo a lesson, and unfortunately, fantasy owners pay the price. Until Skattebo is clearly out of the doghouse with the coaching staff, he has to stay on the bench.
Unlike Skattebo, Love isn't in trouble with the coaching staff, at least not in a way the public knows about. When healthy, he was getting carries. Those carries didn't turn into many points. For example, his 12 carries against the Detroit Lions turned into 2.2 fantasy points. Arizona also isn't using him in the passing game, which is odd since it worked for them against the San Francisco 49ersin Week 3. His injury status helps nothing. Love is another player that fantasy owners cannot trust right now. So, even if he plays, he should stay on the bench.
Stevenson is a top-20 fantasy running back this year, with multiple solid performances. However, Stevenson performs best when he isn't splitting the backfield with TreVeyon Henderson. He is back to sharing carries with Henderson, and that led to just 3.6 fantasy points last week against the New York Jets. Stevenson is a good running back; he is just not startable in fantasy when Henderson is also healthy.
