Miami football marks return to No. 1 with 2001 championship throwbacks

The last time the Miami football team was ranked No. 1, the Hurricanes' notorious orange-and-green jerseys featured the signature thin striping around the shoulders that marked athletic fashion in the early 2000s.

Those looks will be back Saturday, Oct. 24, when UM welcomes Pittsburgh. The Canes announced Thursday, Oct. 22, that they will celebrate that 2001 national championship team with uniforms modeled after those iconic threads.

The 2001 Hurricanes are considered one of the greatest teams in college football history. With Ken Dorsey at quarterback throwing to Andre Johnson and Jeremy Shockey and perhaps the deepest running back room ever (Clinton Portis, Frank Gore, Willis McGahee and Najeh Davenport all would have between fine and Hall of Fame careers in the NFL), Miami ran the table on their way to the program's fifth national championship. The defense featured future NFL standouts Ed Reed, Jonathan Vilma, Antrel Rolle, Vince Wilfork and Jerome McDougle.

Under Larry Coker, Miami opened by obliterating Penn State 33-7 and never looked back, crushing rival Florida State 49-27 in Tallahassee a year after FSU played for the national title themselves. The Canes finished with four straight wins over teams ranked in the AP top-15, capped with a 37-14 win over Nebraska in the Rose Bowl to claim the most recent championship in the team's history.

Miami nearly won its sixth title last season, winning three straight College Football Playoff games as underdogs before falling to undefeated Indiana in the national championship. They have gotten off to a 6-0 start in 2026 with the No. 1 scoring offense and No. 7 scoring defense.

With a dynamic offense led by a pair of Heisman contenders in quarterback Darian Mensah and wide receiver Malachi Toney, the Hurricanes earned the No. 1 spot in the latest US LBM Coaches Poll and the AP rankings. It's the first time they've been atop the rankings since the 2002 season, when the reigning champions saw their bid at a repeat end with a crushing overtime loss to Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl.
