Ebbsfleet United midfielder James Vennings expects the squad to be in the title reckoning this season

Midfielder James Vennings insists Ebbsfleet are capable of winning National League South this season.

After 10 games the Fleet remain unbeaten and Vennings has seen nothing to worry him so far.

“I think we can win it, to be honest,” said Vennings. “The teams that we’ve played against, I’m thinking we should be up there, definitely.

“The way other teams speak about us, other managers and stuff like that, they speak very highly of us. Other players that we’ve played against speak highly of us.

“I think we’ve got a good chance. We just need to keep doing the basics well, keep trying to break teams down, because teams are going to come here and sit behind the ball.

“It’s going to be tough for us to win games. You have to have magic moments, like Charlie Seaman has popped up with at the end on Tuesday.”

Vennings highlighted the training sessions put on by boss Josh Wright as one of the main reasons why they have gelled so quickly this season.

The former Bromley and Braintree man was one of nine summer signings.

“Obviously the boys that have already been here are great characters,” said Vennings. “They’ve made us all feel welcome straight away.

“Then the other boys, you just get to know each other really quickly. We’ve had loads of games, so we’ve got used to each other in a short space of time.

“To be fair, with the training that the gaffer puts on, you learn each other’s playing style very quickly.”

Ebbsfleet will look to continue their unbeaten start in National League South when they host Maidenhead this Saturday.

They met in the FA Cup at York Road last month with the Fleet winning 3-1, although the scoreline didn’t reflect a tough afternoon.

“They made it tough for us at their place as well, even though we won 3-1,” said Vennings.

“It was quite comfortable towards the end, but the first 25 minutes wasn't easy, that’s for sure.

“They'll probably come here and try and press us like they did at their place. It should be a good game.”
