Jamie Carragher pinpoints Mikel Arteta change as he bids to end 92-year Arsenal hoodoo

Mikel Arteta has seemingly taken a more expansive approach this season with Jamie Carragher noticing the change and asking a question of the Arsenal boss

Jamie Carragher has noticed a more attacking approach from Mikel Arteta that presents a significant dilemma for the Arsenal boss. The Gunners played out an enthralling 2-2 draw with Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Wednesday evening, ensuring they have just one defeat in all competitions this season.

That loss was particularly humbling against Brighton in the Premier League but Arsenal have since responded with two very different wins. Some excellent attacking football was on display in their turnaround win over Leeds United before eventually grinding down Nottingham Forest and winning 1-0 at the City Ground.

The 2-1 win over Chelsea also showed the Gunners as a dynamic attacking force and Carragher has noticed that change, which seemingly also makes them more susceptible to conceding. He wrote in His column for The Telegraph: "In Arsenal’s case, the consensus is that improving on last season’s title requires playing more adventurously while finding the extra ingredients needed to win the Champions League. Wednesday’s 2-2 draw with Bayern Munich was a step in the right direction.

"It was an end-to-end, entertaining game in the Allianz Arena. Arsenal’s late equaliser was a work of art which undermined the accusation they do not produce enough silky, attacking football.

"Even so, as it stands, it is difficult to make a compelling argument that Arsenal will win the Champions League without more stardust upfront.

"They lack the weapons of the other European contenders, especially Paris St-Germain, so when the moment of truth comes against the very best in the knockout rounds, the likelihood is Arteta’s side will lack the necessary ammunition."

"It would have been fascinating to watch Arsenal in the parallel universe in which Vinícius Júnior signed, because it’s unlikely he would have been tracking back at the City Ground last weekend. Arteta demands his attackers embrace defensive responsibilities. That’s his make-up. Tactically, he remains more like Jose Mourinho than Wenger."

Back-to-back European champions PSG are quite clearly their biggest competition, demonstrated by their attacking dominance when scoring four goals against both Barcelona and Manchester City. On their way to last season's final, the Gunners conceded just two goals in the knockout stages. It was clear their defensive solidity is the strongest weapon at Arteta's disposal but that is yet to work in Europe, forcing him into a big tactical decision.

Making his team more expansive could be beneficial in some areas but also a risk during a season in which Arsenal are clear title favourites and have the chance to retain their crown for the first time in 92 years.

On Arsenal's style, Carragher added: "The fundamental question for Arteta right now is what can and should he do about it? Stick with a successful blueprint that has earned admiration and won the Premier League, or make the necessary tweaks which might make Arsenal more loved and a better watch every week, but also more vulnerable?

"Staying on the current path he will almost certainly win another Premier League title. Shifting the balance more from defence to attack risks compromising the characteristics which have made Arsenal so dominant domestically."

How much do Arteta and Arsenal fans really crave a change given the road to further Premier League glory is so clear?

When Arteta took over he had to find a different way to get past Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool and Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City. The fact that they are no longer an obstacle may be one of the reasons why there is a feeling he can afford to play with more risk.
