"Too many errors" – Five rugby stars who flopped in Nations Championship Round 4
Untitled design-107

Some of rugby's biggest names had weekends to forget as the Nations Championship delivered another round of costly mistakes, bruised egos and disappointing performances.

England rediscovered their swagger against Australia, South Africa demolished Italy, and Ireland put Argentina to the sword.

Scotland, meanwhile, were left wondering what might have been after another painful defeat to the All Blacks.

While Henry Pollock, Hugo Keenan and Malcolm Marx grabbed the headlines, others would probably prefer to forget the weekend altogether.

From Finn Russell's frustrating afternoon at Murrayfield to Australia's lineout struggles at Twickenham, here are five players who failed to impress in Round 4.

1. Finn Russell (Scotland) – 4/10

Finn Russell has spent years pulling rabbits out of hats. Against New Zealand, the magician appeared to have misplaced his wand.

Scotland's talisman endured a frustrating afternoon as Gregor Townsend's side suffered a 43-21 defeat at Murrayfield.

The Bath fly-half struggled to impose his usual authority on proceedings, particularly as the All Blacks took control after the break.

Despite Ewan Ashman's remarkable hat-trick, Scotland failed to score a single second-half point.

For a player who can unlock defences with one outrageous pass, Russell never quite found the key.

He was eventually replaced as Townsend searched for answers.

Scotland have waited a lifetime to beat New Zealand. Unfortunately, their chief playmaker couldn't produce the magic required this time.

2. Paolo Garbisi (Italy) – 4/10

When South Africa are running riot, the last thing you need is your fly-half adding to the chaos.

Unfortunately for Italy, Paolo Garbisi endured an afternoon where precious little went right.

The Azzurri were torn apart in Turin, suffering a humiliating 66-7 defeat against Rassie Erasmus' world champions.

Garbisi struggled to bring any control to proceedings as the Springboks dominated.

One badly mishit kick that failed to find touch rather neatly summed up his afternoon.

Italian rugby outlet OnRugby awarded the experienced playmaker just 4/10, highlighting the error as a reflection of Italy's miserable performance.

It's difficult to conduct an orchestra when the entire building is on fire, but Garbisi hardly helped put out the flames.

3. Declan Meredith (Australia) – 4/10

Twickenham is a difficult place to learn your trade, particularly when England's forwards are in the mood to make life miserable.

Declan Meredith discovered that the hard way.

The young Wallabies playmaker struggled to get Australia's attack moving as England recorded a commanding 45-22 victory.

With the hosts winning the physical battle, Meredith was regularly left trying to manufacture something from very little.

Australia showed occasional flashes of promise, but their attacking game never developed the consistency required to trouble England.

Meanwhile, Henry Pollock was having the time of his life on the opposite wing.

It was a painful contrast.

Meredith remains a promising talent, but this was a reminder of how unforgiving Test rugby can be.

4. Justo Piccardo (Argentina) – 3.5/10

Argentina's trip to Dublin was already going badly before Justo Piccardo made matters worse.

The centre endured a difficult evening as Ireland cruised to a 42-12 victory at the Aviva Stadium.

His biggest contribution was one he'd rather forget.

Piccardo was shown a yellow card before half-time, leaving his teammates to battle on with 14 men against an Irish side already growing in confidence.

Not exactly the ideal recipe for a comeback.

Hugo Keenan helped himself to a hat-trick as Ireland's backline repeatedly exposed the visitors.

Piccardo struggled to make a meaningful impact, with his disciplinary lapse adding to Argentina's problems.

It was an evening when almost everything that could go wrong did.

RUCK rating: 3.5/10

5. Billy Pollard (Australia) – 5/10

Three lost lineouts against England is hardly the sort of hat-trick Billy Pollard would have been hoping for.

The Australian hooker endured a difficult afternoon as the Wallabies' set-piece struggled to provide a reliable platform.

Against an England pack featuring Maro Itoje, Ollie Chessum and Jamie George, accuracy was always going to be essential.

Unfortunately, Pollard's throwing let him down at crucial moments.

Each missed opportunity handed England another chance to apply pressure, and Steve Borthwick's side were in no mood to be generous.

The hosts eventually ran in seven tries, with Pollard and his teammates left chasing shadows.

Australia had problems across the pitch, so it would be unfair to pin the defeat on one man.

But when your lineout starts giving away possession, winning at Twickenham becomes considerably harder.
