Nuno Espirito Santo has provided a mixed West Ham injury update ahead of Saturday’s crunch Championship clash with West Bromwich Albion, confirming Konstantinos Mavropanos, Joel Veltman and Keiber Lamadrid are doubts.

However, there is encouraging news on West Ham captain Jarrod Bowen, while midfield star Mohamadou Kante also appears to have avoided a feared setback.

Like David Moyes before him, Nuno Espirito Santo generally keeps his team news close to his chest, rarely giving opponents much information about his selection plans. But the West Ham boss offered a more revealing update when speaking ahead of the visit of the Baggies.

The biggest concern remains Konstantinos Mavropanos, who is already expected to miss matches after suffering a significant knee injury during last weekend’s damaging 3-2 defeat to Southampton.

West Ham have three big doubts but two boosts for West Brom

Hammers News exclusively revealed earlier this week that Bowen was following standard recovery protocols for an ankle twist after going over on the joint at a West Ham training session attended by some fans.

The 48 hours after the knock were considered crucial, with West Ham particularly keen to establish whether swelling, stiffness or bruising would develop.

There is now reason for optimism.

Nuno confirmed that Bowen had returned to training with the group on Friday and indicated that the winger appeared to be fine.

That would be a significant relief for West Ham, who desperately need their captain available against West Brom after losing to Southampton.

Bowen remains one of the Hammers’ most influential players and losing him alongside Mavropanos would have represented a considerable double blow.

There was also some encouragement concerning Kante, who had raised concerns after being substituted during the Southampton defeat.

Kante fitness boost as three West Ham players remain doubts

Hammers News previously revealed that Kante felt discomfort and tightness in his hamstring against Southampton following one of his forward sprints during the second half.

His substitution was understood to have been precautionary rather than tactical, with Nuno understandably unwilling to risk aggravating the problem.

Kante has since been seen training, and he was not mentioned by Nuno among the players facing potential availability problems for Saturday.

That suggests the midfielder could be available, although the manager has not explicitly confirmed the Frenchman is fit.

The situation is less encouraging for Mavropanos, fellow key defender Joel Veltman and Keiber Lamadrid.

Mavropanos is the most significant absence after his knee injury against Southampton. There had initially been fears of a lengthy lay-off, but Nuno says subsequent assessments have provided some relief, with the injury not as bad as first feared.

Veltman is another concern for Nuno, leaving the manager potentially short of defensive options at a time when the Greek international is already unavailable.

Lamadrid also remains a doubt as he continues to work towards a return from the knee problem that has kept him out of action.

Nuno will therefore have some important decisions to make when selecting his side.

How West Ham could return to Championship summit

Saturday’s fixture is particularly important after the disappointment of the Southampton defeat.

West Ham remain firmly in the promotion picture and victory over West Brom would give them an opportunity to put pressure back on their rivals.

There is even the prospect of returning to the top of the Championship this weekend. If Middlesbrough lose at home to Charlton Athletic and Swansea fail to beat Blackburn Rovers, victory over West Brom would take Nuno’s side to the summit.

Having Bowen available would be a considerable boost to those ambitions.

But Nuno must also find a solution to his defensive problems, with Mavropanos’ absence and uncertainty over Veltman leaving the manager with some difficult selection decisions.
