The New Jersey Devils start a three-game road trip against the Dallas Stars on Tuesday, Oct. 27, at 8 p.m. ET at American Airlines Center. They’re coming off a 3-0-0 homestand that ended with a 3-1 win over the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday, Oct. 24. Brett Pesce scored the winner, Arseny Gritsyuk added an empty-netter and Jake Allen made 12 saves on 13 shots.

The Devils (7-4-0) have won three straight, but they’re 1-2-0 on the road. This is also the first half of a back-to-back, with a 9 p.m. ET game at the Colorado Avalanche on Wednesday, Oct. 28. Dallas (7-3-1) has won five straight, beating the New York Islanders 6-3 on Sunday, Oct. 25. Three of those five wins came in overtime or a shootout.

Devils Projected Lines

These are the lines from Monday’s practice. Head coach Sheldon Keefe said Dillon will play in Dallas and Declan Chisholm will draw in at Colorado on Wednesday. The starting goalie hasn’t been announced for either game. Keefe said the plan is for Hellebuyck to play on this trip, so he and Allen are listed in no particular order. Allen is 5-2-0 with a 2.84 GAA and .886 save percentage, and he won in Dallas last March. Rémi Poirier wasn’t at practice Monday, and no transaction has been announced.

Five Things to Know

Hellebuyck hasn’t played this season. General manager Sunny Mehta acquired him from the Winnipeg Jets on Friday, Oct. 23. The Devils sent Dawson Mercer, Nick Bjugstad, Nico Daws, 2026 first-round pick Alexander Command, a 2029 second-round pick and a 2027 seventh-round pick to Winnipeg. He practiced Monday, and Keefe said the plan is for him to play on this trip, but he didn’t say which game. With games on back-to-back nights, the Devils will likely need both goalies. Hellebuyck went 23-23-11 with a .895 save percentage in 57 games last season and has 345 career wins and 45 shutouts. The Devils’ team save percentage is .878.

Gritsyuk has goals in a career-high five straight games, and his six goals lead the Devils. He has seven points during the streak and nine on the season. Jack Hughes leads the team with 12 points (3 goals, 9 assists) in 11 games, and Jesper Bratt has 10. Hischier is five points away from 500 for his career.

The Devils lead the NHL with 34.1 shots per game and have outshot all 11 of their opponents. Dallas allows the fewest shots (21.8) and the fewest goals (1.73) per game in the league. At 5-on-5, the Devils have 61.0% of the expected goals (28.14 to 17.97), but their 5-on-5 goals are only 23-21. The Stars are at 54.4% of the expected goals but have outscored opponents 20-13 at 5-on-5 (Post Hockey, through Oct. 25).

The Stars kill 92.3% of their penalties, tied for second in the NHL. The Devils’ power play is at 20.6% (tied for 16th), and Hischier has four of its goals. Dallas’s power play is at 18.5% (21st), but the Devils’ penalty kill ranks 23rd at 74.1%. The Stars also win 56.3% of their faceoffs, best in the league.

Jake Oettinger is 6-2-1 with a 1.43 GAA, a .930 save percentage and three shutouts, and he’s started the last four games. Mikko Rantanen leads Dallas with 14 points (6 goals, 8 assists) and has four goals in the last five games. He had a hat trick against the Boston Bruins on Oct. 20, including the overtime winner. Jason Robertson has 13 points and scored twice Sunday. Roope Hintz has 10 points, and Miro Heiskanen averages 25:39 a night.

Head-to-Head

The teams split last season’s series. Oettinger stopped all 30 shots in a 3-0 Stars win at Prudential Center on Dec. 3, 2025. The Devils won 6-4 at American Airlines Center on March 24, 2026, when they scored four goals on eight shots in the first period. Oettinger was pulled after the first, Allen made 23 saves and Hughes scored twice. Hughes has 7 points (6 goals, 1 assist) in 8 career games against Dallas, and he’s scored twice in each of his last two games against them. Jesper Bratt has 13 points (4 goals, 9 assists) in 15 games against Dallas, the most of any active Devil with New Jersey.

The Bottom Line

This is the toughest test of the season for the Devils’ shot volume. Dallas doesn’t give up much, Oettinger has been sharp and the Stars’ penalty kill has hardly been beaten. The Devils have won the shot battle every night, and Gritsyuk and Hughes are scoring, but on the road they need to stay out of the box and win the 5-on-5 game. Whoever starts in goal, a win would give the Devils four straight before the Colorado game.
