Man United urged to pay whatever it takes to prise Premier League manager from current club

Former Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke believes his old club must break the bank to land Unai Emery.

Emery has been with Aston Villa for just over four years to the day, and he has transformed that club.

The Spaniard has seen many of his top players sold over and over again and rebuilt each time, turning them into a consistent team.

Meanwhile, Man United are 16th in the table with just one Premier League win all season.

Michael Carrick has been given time to turn it around, but should he be dismissed, Yorke has a clear choice.

Speaking on talkSPORT Breakfast with Jeff Stelling and Ally McCoist, he said: "I said this two and a half years ago, Unai Emery was the man to go and get, way before Ruben Amorim came into the equation.

"And just like you go and spend £70million on players, I think you should spend big money on Unai Emery.

"I am not saying £70million, but pay whatever Aston Villa ask and give him the authority to come in and do that.

"I said that way before Amorim, and I got backlash from the Villa fans.

"To this day, I still believe that he is the best manager to get some credibility back at Man United."

Emery's future

Reports suggest that Emery is one of the top targets to be the potential next Man United manager.

But a recent article by The Athletic claimed that the Villans are preparing for Emery to create a dynasty with the club well beyond his contract, which expires in 2029.

Spanish football expert Guillem Balague revealed on White and Jordan recently that Emery has no intention of leaving Villa.

He said: "You have to take this question from Unai Emery's point of view. This is my opinion, but basically he is where he wants to be.

"He is where he is appreciated, where he has been given everything that is required, including the co-ownership; the owners (V Sports) now co-own his own little club back in Spain (Real Union).

"He has also been given a huge amount of responsibility to take the team as far as he wants to, and he wants to use that responsibility to take the team as far as he can."

Carrick latest

talkSPORT understands that Carrick will be in charge for Man United's Champions League game against Roma.

The Red Devils have lost back-to-back matches in Europe, and the Italian giants are yet to lose in the league this term.

But even if they lose that, Manchester United are very unlikely to make a change in the dugout before the international break with just one Premier League match to go.

Senior figures in the boardroom are still hopeful that the Man United legend will turn things around.

Then interestingly, it's Villa at home for Man United.

Ahead of the Roma contest, Carrick insisted that any concerns over his long-term future would have no impact on the preparations for that match.

He said: "That has no influence on how we prepare or on the game tomorrow. We cannot wait for the game tomorrow.

"I can't wait for the game. That is all I am focused on. What happens after, happens. Whatever direction it goes in."
