Jeff Hafley reveals why he made game-winning 4th-down attempt decision

The Miami Dolphins have officially ended their brutal start to the season, snapping a five-game losing streak with a 28-25 win over the Jets to secure their first win of the year. The game was clinched when the Dolphins, who were leading by three points with two minutes remaining in the game at New York's 49-yard line, went for a first down on 4th-and-1 and converted on a Malik Willis run.

said there was a debate over whether he should go for it, and what exactly led him to do so not trusted their offense to get the yardage or decided to trust their defense to stop a final Jets drive. After the game, head coach Jeff Hafley was asked whether or not it was always his intention to go for it. He revealed there was a debate over whether he should or not, and what exactly made him decide to go for it.

"There was always a chance [I wouldn't go for it]," Hafley said. "I went and grabbed the O-line and I looked at them all and I asked them what they thought and what they wanted to do. I saw the look in their eye, and I was very confident they'd get it. As soon as I saw that, there was no doubt in my mind that I'd go for it."

The models showed that the Dolphins were better off going for it, but it didn't really change the expected win percentage that much – it went from an 89% chance of winning by going for it on fourth down to an 84% chance with a punt. So you couldn't really knock his decision either way.

But it wasn't the first time Hafley made a crucial fourth-down call that paid off. Earlier in the game, the Dolphins led 14-7 with just over three minutes left in the first half and faced a 4th-and-2 on New York's 41-yard line. Hafley went for it, and a Willis scramble earned five yards and a first down for the Dolphins. They ended the drive by extending their lead to 21-7 with another touchdown.

It proves Hafley has significant trust in Malik Willis and his offense despite a difficult start to his first season at the helm, and that trust will go a long way toward building rhythm and momentum for the Dolphins as they look to find success. And the fact that such faith in the offense paid off twice in a big way is a good sign for the Dolphins.
