North Wales darts player faces Luke Littler for £501,000

Pwyll ap Llyr Edwards, 34, from Llanuwchllyn, near Bala, is among 24 contestants selected for Netflix’s new live show Beat Luke Littler, airing on Friday, October 30.

The self-employed fencing contractor, who goes by the darts nickname ‘Cambi One Eighty’, has played darts since childhood but never imagined he would end up on Netflix.

Pwyll said: “I started playing darts when I was about three years old, just mucking about.

“Then I think from the age of about eight onwards, I had more interest because it was on the television when I got home from school.”

He now plays for his darts team Eagles A in Llanuwchllyn, competing in the Bala and District darts league, where his team has won the league five years in a row.

The opportunity to appear on Netflix came after his sister-in-law encouraged him to apply.

He explained: “I saw it on Netflix, on the television. It popped up and I thought that could be interesting.

“Then I didn’t think anything of it, and then my wife’s sister sent me a message on WhatsApp saying, ‘You’ve got to try this.’”

Pwyll attended auditions in Manchester on September 19, where he queued for two-and-a-half hours in the rain alongside thousands of hopefuls.

Contestants were tasked with completing a leg of 501 darts in 24 throws or fewer, with Pwyll managing it in 22.

He then progressed through interviews with producers before meeting darts legends Phil Taylor, Barry Hearn and Laura Turner.

He admitted he never expected to be chosen.

He said: “I knew thousands would be going, and I saw thousands when I was there, and much better players than me.

“But still, a lot of the players didn’t finish the leg, so it was who finished the leg on the day.”

Two weeks later, while out fishing, Pwyll received a phone call confirming he had secured a place on the show.

Now preparing to face the world number one, he admits the challenge will be tough.

“I’m excited. I’ve got nothing to lose,” he said.

“He’s the world number one and he can be unbeatable most of the time, so we’ll see how it goes.”

With £501,000 up for grabs, Pwyll already has plans for the money should he pull off an unlikely victory.

He said: “We’re thinking of building an extension on the house, so it would help massively to pay for the extension.

“We’ve got a baby due in March, so it would help towards that as well. Just for the family.”

His wife, parents, brother, friends and members of his local darts team will be travelling to Manchester to support him.

However, beyond the potential winnings, Pwyll is particularly proud of the opportunity to represent his home community and his native language.

He said: “Welsh is my first language, so it’s very good for the world to hear the language on a big platform like Netflix, especially because it’s live.

“I hope it gets more attention for the language. I’d like to put Bala on the map, and especially Llanuwchllyn, where I live.”

His nickname, ‘Cambi One Eighty’, also has family roots, originating from Cambrian House, where his grandfather once lived and was known locally as Cambi.

Reflecting on the experience, Pwyll said he hopes to enjoy every moment regardless of the result.

He added: “It’s been an unbelievable experience up to now, just going through all the stages.

“I’d like to just enjoy it really and take it in for the moment, whatever happens.”

Beat Luke Littler will be streamed live on Netflix from 7pm on Friday, October 30.
