Mike Penders was perhaps the only Chelsea player who came out of today’s disappointing defeat to Sunderland with any credit to his name.
The goal he conceded was a penalty, and he made a couple of really important saves, as well as looking confident in distribution. Given all that, perhaps it was no surprise he was nominated as the Chelsea player to speak to the media after the game.
“You know when you come here in this stadium it will be a difficult game and that was the matter tonight,” Penders said to Sky Sports.
“We knew it would be tough, we are disappointed we lost the game. At one point it went very fast from side to side. Sometimes we had to control. With 11 behind the ball it is difficult to find the spaces.
“How you do – good or not – it is a matter of staying together. The international break is coming so the lads can be calm in the head and when we all come back we need to be motivated to go again… For me it wasn’t a penalty. He barely touched him, I think it was the other way round. He grabbed him.”
Two weeks of international break is going to be very painful given this result. Fans are hurting – years of underperformance means patience is in short supply.
Penders’ big moment in the game was an impressive save at the feet of Wilson Isidor – unfortunately it didn’t mean anything for Chelsea in the end.
The introduction of Estevao today was predictable – the player taken off for him less so.
