Chelsea delivered what could prove the final nail in Michael Carrick’s coffin as they eased to a 2-0 win over Manchester United at Stamford Bridge.
Carrick’s side started better and thought they had gone ahead through Matheus Cunha, but his header was ruled out for offside.
Amad Diallo and Bruno Fernandes spurned good opportunities before the break, and the Red Devils were made to pay after half-time when Morgan Rogers drove through the heart of United’s defence before dinking a superb finish over Senne Lammens.
Lisandro Martinez’s foolish challenge on Wesley Fofana saw the Argentine sent off shortly after, with Cole Palmer dispatching the resulting penalty to double the Blues’ lead.
Given his first Premier League start of the season, Estevao almost got himself on the scoresheet, too, but his fierce strike was narrowly ruled out for offside.
Metro was at Stamford Bridge to rate Chelsea’s performances in what proved another nightmare afternoon for Carrick’s side.
Wasn’t called into action a great deal throughout the 90 minutes, but made the saves he had to make.
Continues to prove a versatile option at right-back. Carried the ball forward well, but also made an important block to deny Matheus Cunha’s rebound effort in the first half.
Remains a liability at the heart of Chelsea’s defence. Caught napping by Amad Diallo twice in the first half and fortunate not to be punished by the United winger.
Did improve after the break and won the penalty for Chelsea’s second after a foul from Lisandro Martinez.
Far better than his centre-back partner in all areas of the game. Made a good block to prevent Bruno Fernandes’ effort midway through the first half.
Given a tough time by Amad down Chelsea’s left, but stuck to his task. Showed a good willingness to get forward but struggled to get on the ball and impact the game in the final third.
A far better performance than a week ago against Tottenham. Along with Lavia, he won the midfield battle for his side, forcing Michael Carrick into an early reshuffle after the break.
Back into the starting XI with a bang. Superb with and without the ball in the heart of Chelsea’s midfield, he won the pivotal challenge that set Morgan Rogers free for Chelsea’s opener.
One of his best games in a Chelsea shirt.
An exciting but still raw talent. Got on the ball in promising positions on plenty of occasions, but too often made the wrong decision with his final shot or cross, especially in the first half.
Despite that, desperately unlucky to have a superb finish chalked off in the second half after a contentious offside decision.
Just about took care of his penalty, but still looks a tad off his devastating best.
Dropped very deep in the first half to get on the ball, which inhibited his ability to impact the game where it really matters. Looked far better and more threatening once United went down to ten men, and should have done better with a great opportunity in extra time.
A superb surging run and clinical finish to open the scoring, even if he was aided by a non-existent United defence.
His physicality is also hugely important for Alonso’s side. Won a number of key challenges to help spark turnovers and opportunities for Chelsea on the break.
Has mainly been used as a right wing-back this season, but tasked with playing as a makeshift centre forward today in the continued absence of Joao Pedro.
Went close with an effort before half-time and led the Chelsea press with plenty of intensity, but clearly not his natural position.
