A groundbreaking two-time darts champion has tragically passed away aged 71, with tributes pouring in for Sweden's greatest ever player. Stefan Lord became the first and only international competitor to capture the coveted News of the World Championship, securing victory in 1978 and 1980. The Swedish star also reached the BDO World Championship semi-finals on two occasions. Darts legend John Lowe honoured Lord on social media on Thursday, writing: "My good friend for many years Stefan Lord, passed away yesterday, he was a Swedish pioneer for the sport of darts, probably the most well know player in the country, winner of the News of the World twice, 1980 and 1982.
The Swedish ace reached the last four again in 1982, suffering defeat against the iconic Jockey Wilson. The year after, he progressed to the quarter-finals before losing to Tony Brown.
His final BDO appearance came in 1988, when he was knocked out by the 'Singapore Slinger' Paul Lim.
"We always had plenty to talk about when we met, which was in many countries around the world, Stefan made his final home in Pattaya Thailand. Thanks for the many memories Stefan, your friend John."
Lord defeated John Coward in the 1978 final and Dave Whitcombe in the 1980 News of the World final, with his maiden title arriving in the same year he fell to Lowe in the BDO World Championship semi-final.
