Chelsea And Liverpool Target £50m Left-Back: Should Alonso Join The Transfer Battle?
Chelsea Flag Graphic

Chelsea Transfer News: Chelsea’s left-back plans merit attention under Xabi Alonso. Five wins, one draw and three defeats have kept the Blues in the top-four picture, while Alonso’s fluid system asks wide defenders to offer width, recover quickly and contribute inside during possession. That workload makes depth important, particularly when opponents attack the spaces behind Chelsea’s advancing wing-backs.

Pep Chavarría arrived from Rayo Vallecano for £16.3 million and signed until 2031, while Jorrel Hato remains another young option with a contract running through the same year. Both give Alonso room to develop his wing-back structure, although Chelsea still appear interested in adding a more established profile. Another expensive signing would need to offer a clear improvement over their existing options, rather than simply increase competition.

Liverpool have a different calculation. Andoni Iraola’s side sit fifth with four wins, three draws and two defeats from nine league games, using Milos Kerkez as a key option and Konstantinos Tsimikas for cover. The 30-year-old Greek defender is in the final year of his Anfield contract, so a departure could leave Liverpool needing a successor next summer. That possibility makes their interest in another young left-back easier to explain.

Sport Witness, citing Senegalese outlet D Sports, reports that Chelsea and Liverpool have contacted El Hadji Malick Diouf’s agent to register interest. Brentford remain adamant he will not leave in January, despite attention from both clubs. The 21-year-old joined the Bees late in the summer after West Ham’s relegation, having arrived in England from Slavia Prague in July 2025.

His start at Brentford has been limited with five Premier League appearances, 156 minutes, one start, and two EFL Cup outings. The Senegal international’s pace and direct crossing abilities offer attacking promise, but a 72 per cent passing completion rate points to room for improvement in possession. Brentford paid about £40 million for him and hold a contract until 2031, with an extra-year option; his listed valuation is around £30 million. Any sale would likely demand a premium.

Chelsea Transfer News: Should Chelsea pay a premium for Diouf?

Chelsea have already spent £16.3 million on Chavarría and £34 million on Valentín Barco, so another major left-back fee would need to displace an existing plan. Diouf’s potential is clear, yet one Premier League start hardly proves he can handle Alonso’s positional rotations and technical demands every week. Chelsea should demand sustained progress before paying a premium, particularly with two young options already competing for minutes.

Liverpool’s calculation could change if Tsimikas leaves. Replacing him would become a genuine squad requirement, although Iraola still needs reliable ball retention from his full-backs. Diouf could offer long-term upside, but his current passing numbers don’t justify an automatic first-choice role.

Both clubs should keep watching; Brentford’s long contract gives them leverage, and a fee above £50 million would carry significant risk for a player still adapting to English football.
