Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboslzai has been praised by Arsenal fans after a reporter's 'disgraceful' question following the Premier League clash between the two sides at Anfield on Sunday afternoon.
Arsenal went into the match looking to go three points clear over Manchester City at the top of the Premier League. Liverpool were hoping to move into third and close the gap to the two teams to just three points.
The Gunners took the lead in the 16th minute when Kai Havertz tapped home an exquisite cross from Declan Rice. Liverpool did everything they could to find an equaliser, but they could not find a way past David Raya, meaning Arsenal came away from Merseyside with all three points.
Szoboszlai was back in Liverpool's squad after missing their previous three matches with a muscle injury. He did not have the impact he would have wanted after entering the fray in the 58th minute.
Liverpool's vice-captain spoke to Viaplay reporter and former Premier League footballer Jan Aage Fjørtoft after the match. Arsenal fans were not happy with a question that the Norwegian asked Szoboszlai during the interview.
Fjørtoft asked: "It's difficult with Arsenal... there's a lot of stop and starts in the game. How difficult is it to play against a team like that?" Szoboszlai responded:
"We might do the same if we were leading 1-0. And they wouldn't do the same if they are losing 1-0. That's football. We have to keep on going."
Arsenal fans have slammed Fjørtoft, claiming he was trying to provoke Szoboszlai into criticising their style of play. They've also praised the Hungarian for refusing to speak badly of the Gunners.
One fan said: "Earned my respect Dom. Interviewer trying so hard to press him and get him [to] rant about Arsenal, but he showed him class."
A second commented: "Collect that mic from that moron. Szobo you earned my respect." A third said: "The interviewer tried to make false claims only for Szo to embarrass him like that. I love it."
A fourth wrote: "That journalist is a disgrace btw… trying to create a narrative when clearly Sobo isn’t biting," while a fifth stated: "All my respect to Sobo for being fair and reasonable despite the ridiculous questions."
Szobsozlai, considered one of the best midfielders in the Premier League, also rued how inconsistent Liverpool are. “Some days it feels like we are at the top, and some days it feels like we are not even close," he said. "It takes time to be at the top, I think.”
When asked what a good season would be for Liverpool, Szoboszlai replied: “To win the league. We are Liverpool, we always have to be there with this mindset and then work for it, and let’s see.”
Liverpool are away to Fenerbahce in the Champions League on Wednesday, before returning to Premier League action on Sunday, November 8, when they take on Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.
