The Manchester United squad are all on the same page over Michael Carrick’s future at Old Trafford, according to new reports. The Red Devils have been plunged into crisis after winning just two of their opening 12 matches across all competitions this season. They are currently on an eight-game run without a victory.
It is claimed that INEOS were planning to sack Carrick following a car crash a week that saw United concede seven goals across back-to-back defeats against Como and Bournemouth.
However, the top brass at Old Trafford were unable to agree on a potential replacement, meaning Carrick was given a stay of execution.
It comes after captain Bruno Fernandes made headlines for comments made about Carrick’s tactics following the Como defeat.
He was subsequently left out of the starting XI for the Bournemouth match and did not come off the bench, although Carrick insisted it was only for ‘football reasons’.
In the wake of the unexpected show of faith in Carrick, it is claimed by The Guardian that the United boss and his skipper have now patched things up. The pair are believed to have held face-to-face talks on Wednesday ahead of a crucial run of fixtures.
The outlet also reports that the entire United dressing room are on the same page and have made the same vow as Fernandes: to fully commit to the manager and do their all to turn the season around.
They recognise their role in the current situation and are pleased that Carrick is sticking around
This was a message relayed by Harry Maguire following the Bournemouth loss and before a decision on Carrick’s future had been made. He said post-match: "Yeah, of course.
"We're fully behind Michael. He came into the team last season and turned our season around and managed to finish in third position and managed to get Champions League football this season. As individuals, we're not playing well enough."
Their first chance to put that right will come away to Chelsea on Saturday afternoon. It’s the first in a tricky run of fixtures either side of the international break, with United returning to Old Trafford to face Roma on Tuesday.
Following that, United complete their schedule before the November international break with another home match, this time against in-form Aston Villa.
Immediately after the club campaign resumes, it’s a daunting trip to Anfield to play bitter rivals Liverpool, and then an away match against Sporting in the Champions League.
