It didn’t take long for Sayvia Sellers to turn heads this season.

The senior guard for the Washington Huskies notched the first triple-double of the year in women’s college basketball by racking up 25 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists in a season-opening 79-63 victory on Monday, Nov. 2 over UC San Diego.

Sellers is the first Washington player to have a triple-double since Chantel Osahor – who is now an assistant coach at Gonzaga – did it in 2016. Sellers shot 9-of-20 from the floor and also logged a block and a steal in 33 minutes of play. Her rebound and assist totals were both single-game career-highs.

A 5-foot-7 guard from Anchorage, Alaska, Sellers is coming off a season where she was an All-Big Ten selection as the bus driver for a Washington team that advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, where they lost in overtime by just three points to TCU. Sellers averaged 18.1 points, 3.9 assists, 2.9 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game while shooting 47.3% from the floor.

UC San Diego isn’t some pushover opponent either. The Tritons have played in the last two NCAA Tournaments and are coached by Heidi VanDerveer, the younger sister of Tara — the former Hall of Fame coach at Stanford.

Washington is entering its sixth season with Tina Langley at the helm of the program. The former Rice coach has guided the Huskies to back-to-back NCAA Tournaments for the first time in nearly a decade, when Mike Neighbors guided teams led by Kelsey Plum to three straight, a stretch that included a trip to the 2016 Final Four.

Sellers was the team’s leader in scoring and assists last season, a trend that seems like it will continue this season.

Washington is back in action on Thursday, Nov. 5 against Pacific.

They’ll face a Power 4 opponent on Nov. 20, when they take on Stanford in a game that will be streamed on Peacock.
