Older Rangers fans will know Ally McCoist’s start to life at Rangers under Graeme Souness wasn’t the best. Despite his strong seasons from 83-6, McCoist found himself on the bench in the early portion of Souness’ reign.

We spoke to Ally about the new book and Souness’ impact on Rangers.

We started by mentioning his old manager’s book:

Q: Your old boss Graeme Souness has released a book of his Rangers life. The start you had at Rangers under him wasn’t the best, but as you told us before, you worked hard and by 89/90 you were a mainstay under him. Will you be giving his book a read and how is your relationship with him these days?

“That’ll be a read! I’ll probably be reading it from behind the couch! No, not at all. He transformed Scottish football, never mind Rangers, when he came up.

“The next minute, a couple of things went our way with English clubs being banned from Europe and things like that, and all of a sudden we were signing the England captain, the England goalkeeper, Trevor Francis, Ray Wilkins, and all these guys.

“Gary Stevens, Trevor Stevens. So let me assure you that’ll be a read. I’ll certainly be reading it, for sure.”

And to round off our exclusive with Rangers’ icon McCoist, we asked him how his life has panned out and how his young self would see it.

Q: What would young Ally (say late 80s into the 90s) think of how your life panned out? Would he have envisaged post-football punditry? You clearly were as comfortable in front of the camera as you were on the pitch, what do you think he’d say to you now?

“I’d have to say my career certainly exceeded expectations. But at the same time, when you look back, you can still think you’ve had a couple of disappointments along the way.

“Not regrets, I wouldn’t say any regrets to be honest with you, but like most people in any profession, you’ve got a couple of disappointments.

“But no, I think if somebody said at the start of your career, particularly as a young boy signing with St Johnstone, that you’d go and represent your country at World Cups and European Championships and win a couple of golden boots and score goals for Rangers, I think you’d bite their hand off, to be brutally honest.

“But that said, you’ve still got one or two disappointments which make the whole package up, don’t they?”

9IAR champion, playing at world cup, European Cups and nearly the final of the Champions League, he did not bad for sure. And now he’s probably Britain’s most popular pundit in the media. Also not bad.

And his take on Souness book was as diplomatic as Ally always is.
